Many people today are trying to reduce sugar because too much sugar can cause health problems like weight gain, diabetes, and even increase the risk of cancer. With so many sugar substitutes available in the market, it has become confusing for people to choose the right one. To make this easier, Dr Jayesh Sharma, a cancer surgeon from Raipur, shared simple and clear advice on which sweeteners are safe and which should be used carefully.
Dr Sharma said that artificial sweeteners that come in small packets, or in sugar-free soft drinks, are not very harmful and do not cause cancer. They can help reduce calories, which may be useful for people trying to lose weight. But he also said that these sweeteners can affect the healthy bacteria in the stomach. Because of this, some people feel more hungry after using them and end up eating more, which means these sweeteners may not always help with weight loss.
He also talked about low-calorie sugar substitutes found in sugar-free sweets and candies. These are made from ingredients like sucralose or erythritol. They taste sweet and have very few calories. They also do not cause a sudden rise in blood sugar, which makes them helpful for people with diabetes. However, these substitutes may sometimes cause digestion problems like gas or bloating. Due to this, Dr Sharma said that in many situations, using a small amount of regular sugar is still better than using these artificial sweeteners all the time.
Dr Sharma recommended natural sweeteners such as stevia and monk fruit. These come from plants, do not have calories, and do not increase blood sugar levels. Stevia can also be used while cooking and is considered around 80% safe. Monk fruit is also a good choice, but there is less long-term research available about it.
Dr Sharma advised people to understand their own body and use sweetness in moderation. If someone loves sweet taste, they can use natural sweeteners sometimes and small amounts of regular sugar when needed. His message was that balance is more important than strict restriction.
This information is meant to help people make better choices but should not replace medical advice. For any health concerns, it is best to talk to a doctor.
