Two-time Olympic medallist and former world champion PV Sindhu has highlighted how Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s words of encouragement have deeply inspired Indian athletes. She emphasized that the PM values effort, dedication, and perseverance more than just medals and trophies.

Valuing Effort Over Medals

Sindhu shared that even when athletes feel disappointed for not securing gold, PM Modi reminds them, “Getting a medal itself is a big thing.” She noted that the Prime Minister consistently acknowledges the hard work behind every performance, whether athletes narrowly miss a podium finish or a crucial opportunity.

“When I got the bronze, it was obvious to feel sad that I couldn’t get the gold or a better medal. But he always said it doesn’t matter; getting a medal itself is a big thing,” Sindhu said.

She further explained that Modi’s appreciation extends to all athletes, including those who narrowly miss by seconds or opportunities, showing that he values their spirit and effort above the result.

Impact on the Indian Olympic Contingent

Sindhu recalled the Indian contingent’s interaction with PM Modi after the Tokyo Olympics. The women’s hockey team had finished fourth, narrowly missing a medal, and the team felt disheartened. However, the Prime Minister’s words lifted their spirits:

“He said it doesn’t matter, you have done really well. Everybody was upset, but the appreciation that they got from him made them feel like they had almost won everything.”

She added that PM Modi never frames athletes’ achievements in terms of loss. Instead, he emphasizes pride in their dedication:

“He always told us that you have done much better, and we are proud that you have done so much. That is the value he gives to us, and we are very lucky that way.”

Sindhu also recalled a personal reflection from earlier this year, noting the symbolic parallel between her career and PM Modi’s tenure as Prime Minister:

“Almost poetic in its own way, when Modiji became Prime Minister, I began winning. It feels as if my journey and his leadership were running side by side, shaping milestones that became defining chapters of my career.”

For Sindhu and many other athletes, PM Modi’s genuine appreciation represents more than recognition of victories. It is a reinforcement of the dedication, discipline, and spirit that define every athlete representing India.
