Delhi Air Quality Above 300: Doctor Shares 10 Simple Ways to Make Indoor Air Safer

Delhi is again facing very dangerous air pollution. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in many parts of the city has crossed 300, which falls in the “very poor” and “hazardous” category. At some moments early morning, the AQI even reached above 700 in a few areas. This means the air is full of harmful particles that can enter the lungs and cause breathing problems.

Many people think that closing all windows and staying inside the home will completely protect them. But doctors warn that indoor air can also be polluted. Chemicals from cleaning sprays, smoke, dust, wet walls, pets, or even the materials used in furniture can make the air inside the home unsafe too.

Dr. Sachin Kumar, a pulmonologist from Bengaluru, has shared 10 easy and practical ways to clean indoor air and protect your family’s health. His tips are simple to follow and do not require major changes.

He explained that when we breathe polluted air, small particles and gases enter our body. These can cause coughing, asthma, low oxygen levels, lung infections, heart problems, and can even increase the risk of cancer over time. Children, elderly people, and pregnant women are at higher risk. Houses that are damp or have poor ventilation allow pollution to stay trapped inside.

To reduce the risk, Dr. Kumar suggests avoiding cigarette smoke inside the house. Smoke that sticks to clothes and furniture can still harm people even if no one is smoking at the moment. He also advises choosing solid wood furniture instead of cheap wood boards that use chemical glue. When cleaning the house with strong products like bleach or glass cleaner, wearing a mask can help protect the lungs from harmful fumes.

Using an air purifier with a HEPA filter can remove up to 99% of dust and pollution particles from the room. Opening windows when the outside pollution level is low can improve airflow. If there is dampness in the house, it should be fixed because moisture can cause fungus and mold that trigger breathing problems. Using fans, dehumidifiers, and repairing leaks can help reduce humidity.

If you have pets, brushing and cleaning them regularly helps to lower the amount of dust and allergens inside the home. Also, it is better to avoid using wood for heating or cooking indoors because it releases dangerous smoke. Electric or solar heaters are safer choices. Some indoor plants like aloe vera, peace lily, and snake plant can also help to improve air quality naturally.

At a time when the air outside is extremely polluted, taking care of the air inside the home becomes very important. These small steps can help protect the lungs and keep the family healthier. While long-term solutions to pollution require government action and large-scale changes, every household can make their indoor environment safer.
