Delhi Airport officials have claimed that a viral video showing water pouring down at Terminal 1 (T-1) is an "old" clip, following a tragic incident where one person died and eight were injured due to a canopy collapse after heavy rainfall. The incident has raised significant questions about airport safety.
The video circulating online depicts water cascading down from the canopy at Indira Gandhi International Airport's Terminal 1, suggesting structural issues exacerbated by the rain. Despite Delhi Airport's assertion that the video is outdated, activist Deepika Narayan Bhardwaj, who filmed the footage, has vehemently disputed this claim.
Responding to the airport's statement, Bhardwaj provided evidence to support the authenticity of her video. She shared a timestamp and challenged airport authorities to verify the footage's legitimacy through their CCTV records. In a social media exchange, she emphasized the importance of accountability and urged sensitivity towards the incident's gravity.

Operations at Terminal 1, primarily handling domestic flights, have been halted indefinitely. Flights have been temporarily relocated to Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 to ensure passenger safety and continuity of operations. Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has formed a technical committee to investigate the canopy collapse thoroughly.
In an official statement, DIAL attributed the collapse to severe overnight rain and strong winds, which compromised the structure's integrity. The committee aims to determine the precise cause of the incident promptly.
The incident has prompted widespread concern about infrastructure safety during adverse weather conditions, underscoring the need for rigorous maintenance and swift corrective measures at one of India's busiest airports.
