Following the devastating impact of Cyclone Remal, the death toll in low-lying areas of Bangladesh has surged to at least 10 people, with over 30,000 homes obliterated and tens of thousands more left damaged, as confirmed by top local officials on Monday.

Showkat Ali, the government administrator of Barisal district, reported that the majority of fatalities occurred due to individuals being crushed under fallen houses or collapsed walls, with seven deaths recorded in his district alone. Meanwhile, three additional fatalities were reported in neighbouring districts, primarily caused by drowning incidents.

The cyclone's ferocious gales and pounding waves relentlessly battered the coast as Cyclone Remal made its landfall on Sunday night. Although by Monday afternoon, the cyclone had weakened into a storm, persistent winds and heavy rainfall continued to lash the coastal regions.

In Khulna district, two individuals lost their lives, according to government administrator Helal Mahmud, who also revealed the staggering extent of damage to homes in the division. Over 123,000 homes suffered damage, with approximately 31,000 homes completely destroyed by the cyclone's wrath.

Meanwhile, in Chittagong, one person succumbed to the cyclone's fury. Administrator Tofael Islam reported that over 40,000 individuals sought refuge in cyclone shelters amidst the torrential rains and strong winds.

The aftermath of Cyclone Remal left over 12.5 million people without power, disclosed Biswanath Sikder, the chief engineer of the Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board, the country's largest state-run power distribution company. Sikder assured that power supply would be restored once the cyclone situation improved.

The catastrophic impact of Cyclone Remal underscores the urgent need for relief efforts and support to assist affected communities in rebuilding their lives and livelihoods in the wake of this natural disaster.
