On Monday, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella unveiled a groundbreaking new category of PC featuring generative artificial intelligence tools integrated directly into Windows, the world-leading operating system. The tech giant anticipates that over 50 million of these "AI PCs" will be sold in the next year, reflecting the high demand for devices powered by ChatGPT-style technology.
At a launch event in Redmond, Washington, Nadella introduced this innovative class of Windows PCs, which he referred to as "Copilot Plus." He emphasized that these are the fastest, most AI-ready Windows PCs ever built, engineered to harness the power of distributed AI.

Microsoft has been at the forefront of integrating generative AI into its products, setting a fast pace that has often left rival Google trailing. The company's AI, branded as Copilot, is now embedded across various Microsoft products, including Teams, Outlook, and the Windows operating system. Despite attempts, Microsoft has yet to successfully rejuvenate Bing, its online search engine, with generative AI capabilities.
This strategic shift toward AI has been well-received on Wall Street, propelling Microsoft to become the world's largest company by market capitalization, surpassing Apple. Nadella's announcement comes on the heels of recent updates from Google and ChatGPT-maker OpenAI, which showcased enhancements to their chatbots, including more human-like interactions and the ability to interpret surroundings via video, although these innovations are not yet available to the public.
Google also revealed it would incorporate AI answers into its leading search engine, despite concerns that this might reduce its advertising revenues. Microsoft is a major investor in OpenAI, having committed around $13 billion in cloud computing credits to support ChatGPT's significant computing needs.
Analysts predict that the demand for AI products will significantly boost Microsoft and Google's cloud computing businesses, with customers willing to pay a premium for ChatGPT-like capabilities. Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives estimates that AI will contribute $25 billion to $30 billion to Microsoft's revenue by 2025. He describes the current investment in AI as unprecedented and sees it as the first phase of an ongoing AI revolution.
Microsoft's move to integrate AI into PCs and devices comes just before an anticipated Apple event next month, where ChatGPT's features are expected to be showcased in a new iPhone. Media reports also hint at a potential partnership between Apple and OpenAI.
The tech giants are accelerating the release of these AI-powered products despite concerns about the societal impact of generative AI. Regulatory authorities, including those in the typically lightly regulated US, are considering measures to more closely monitor AI developments and possibly impose restrictions on its use.
