In a recent statement, Japan's Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama has called on the trade minister to avoid public remarks regarding monetary policy, reaffirming that such matters are under the domain of the Bank of Japan.

This advice follows comments made by Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Ryosei Akazawa, who hinted at the possibility of an interest rate increase in April to bolster the national currency. His words raised concerns about governmental interference in central bank operations.

Katayama pointed out that, according to Japanese law, it is the central bank that holds exclusive rights over monetary policy tools and decisions. She mentioned that both she and Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi had counseled Akazawa to refrain from such statements in the future.

The finance minister emphasized the importance of the central bank's independence for ensuring economic stability and maintaining market trust. She insisted that communication regarding policy must be coherent and consistent with the assigned roles of different institutions.

Following the meeting, Akazawa chose not to disclose the details of his discussion with Katayama but reiterated that monetary policy decisions are entirely the responsibility of the Bank of Japan.

Market anticipations surrounding a potential interest rate rise in April have diminished due to persistent global uncertainties, including geopolitical issues. This situation has added to the already precarious outlook for Japan's economy.

Katayama also touched on the recent surge in long-term government bond yields, which have approached levels unseen in nearly three decades. She affirmed that Japan would pursue its debt management strategy in close collaboration with financial markets and through regular bond issuance.
