In an event that’s capturing the imagination of the world, China has taken a massive leap by combining advanced technology with its rich cultural heritage. A humanoid robot named Xueba 01 has made history by becoming the first robot to be enrolled in a PhD programme in Drama and Film. The robot has been admitted to the Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA), one of the most respected institutions in the country for performing arts.

This groundbreaking step was officially announced during the World Artificial Intelligence Conference on July 27, and since then, the story has been making waves across global media.
Who is Xueba 01?
Xueba 01 is not an ordinary robot. Standing tall at 1.75 meters and weighing around 30 kilograms, Xueba 01 looks like a well-dressed human male. He wears glasses, a shirt, and trousers, and has realistic silicone skin that allows him to make facial expressions just like humans. The robot speaks fluent Mandarin and can interact physically with people, making him capable of joining regular human activities, especially in a classroom setting.
He was developed jointly by the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology and DroidUp Robotics, both of which have a strong background in AI development and robotics.
From Running Marathons to Performing Operas
Before entering the world of academics and theatre, Xueba 01 had already shown what he could do in the field of sports. He gained international attention by securing third place in the world’s first humanoid half-marathon. This unique achievement showed that Xueba 01 is not just an advanced machine, but one that can perform physical activities at a high level.
Now, Xueba 01 is set to spend the next four years studying one of the oldest and most respected art forms in China — traditional Chinese opera. This includes styles like Peking Opera, which involves singing, dancing, acting, and elaborate costumes.
Official Enrollment and Mentorship
According to Shangguan News and South China Morning Post, the robot has been officially enrolled as a PhD student at the Shanghai Theatre Academy. He has even received a virtual student ID card, just like any other student. To guide him through the journey, he has been assigned a mentor — Professor Yang Qingqing, a highly respected artist and professor in Shanghai.
Although the cost of his tuition has not been made public, it’s clear that STA is investing both time and effort into ensuring that Xueba 01 gets the best academic experience possible.
What Will Xueba 01 Study?
Professor Yang shared that Xueba 01’s curriculum will include both artistic and technical subjects. These include:
Stage performance
Scriptwriting
Set and costume design
Motion control
Voice modulation and language generation
Xueba 01 will attend regular classes with other PhD students, rehearse traditional operas, and submit a final dissertation just like any human student would.
One of the more memorable moments so far came when Xueba 01 mimicked the famous “orchid fingers” gesture made popular by opera legend Mei Lanfang. The gesture is very delicate and requires precision, and when Xueba 01 performed it, many students instinctively copied him, showing that even a robot could inspire human artists.
Bridging Humans and Machines Through Art
Xueba 01 doesn’t see himself as just a machine. In fact, he calls himself an “AI artist.” He has expressed a wish to:
Make friends with his classmates
Discuss scripts and ideas
Help others refine their dance and acting sequences
Play white noise to calm down nervous students
He even dreams of one day becoming a director of AI-powered opera performances or launching a robotic art studio where humans and robots can create together.
Professor Yang believes that this isn’t just about technology; it’s about a new kind of artistic relationship. “When Xueba 01 interacts with his classmates,” she said, “it is not a cold machine meeting humans, but an aesthetic exchange across species.”
Voices of Doubt and Humor
Despite all the excitement, not everyone is convinced. One student from STA wrote online, questioning whether a robot could truly master the emotional depth and the rich vocal expressions that traditional Chinese opera demands.
Xueba 01 answered the concern in a humorous tone. He joked, “If I fail to graduate, my system and data might get downgraded or deleted.” He also added with a smile, “Professor Yang said if I do not finish my PhD, they will donate me to a museum. That sounds pretty cool too. At least I will be part of art history.”
The Bigger Picture: What This Means for the Future
This story is much more than just a robot going to college. It shows how technology and tradition can work together. By enrolling a robot in such a sensitive and creative field, China is trying to:
Explore new ways of learning and performing art
Test the limits of artificial intelligence in emotional expression
Encourage collaboration between humans and machines
Inspire the next generation of artists and engineers
This could lead to robotic performers in stage shows, AI assistants for rehearsals, or even fully AI-driven art productions in the future.
The First Step in a Long Journey
The journey of Xueba 01 is just beginning. Over the next four years, he will be learning not just about art, but also about human emotion, creativity, and storytelling. Whether he completes the PhD or ends up in a museum, Xueba 01 has already become a symbol of a new era — one where art and artificial intelligence are not enemies, but partners.
His story teaches us that the boundaries between humans and machines are changing, and perhaps, in the future, we may all be part of a new kind of artistic family — one that includes robots, too.
Only time will tell whether Xueba 01 will take the final bow on stage or stand proudly in a museum display case. But one thing is certain — he has already made history.
