China Launches Military Drills Near Taiwan Amid Rising Tensions

The Chinese army said on Wednesday that it started new military training in the sea near Taiwan. This happened just one day after China sent soldiers, ships, and planes around the island. China says Taiwan belongs to it, but Taiwan does not agree.

A Chinese army officer, Senior Colonel Shi Yi, said that the exercises will test how well the army can block important areas and attack key places. These drills are happening in the middle and south parts of the Taiwan Strait. This waterway is very important because many big ships use it to carry goods around the world.

On Tuesday, China sent its army, navy, air force, and rocket force to surround Taiwan. In answer to this, Taiwan also sent its soldiers and warplanes to keep watch and protect the island.

For many years, China has been sending more and more warplanes and navy ships near Taiwan. It wants to show its power and make Taiwan feel pressure. But Taiwan’s leaders have always said they do not belong to China and want to stay independent.

The Taiwan Strait is a place where problems between countries could happen. The United States is Taiwan’s biggest supporter and helps it with weapons and defense. China does not like this and has warned the U.S. to stay away from Taiwan. China has also said that one day, if needed, it may use force to take control of Taiwan.

Tensions between China and Taiwan have grown worse since Lai Ching-te became Taiwan’s president in May 2024. China believes Lai wants Taiwan to be fully independent, and this has made China increase its military activities near the island.

As China continues these exercises, the situation in the area is becoming more serious. Many people are worried that the conflict between China and Taiwan could grow bigger.
