China Keeps Taiwan on Edge with 35 Military Aircraft, 7 Ships in 24 Hours

The Ministry of National Defense of Taiwan reported on Thursday that it had detected a significant military presence from China, including 35 Chinese military aircraft and seven naval vessels operating near Taiwan within a 24-hour period ending at 6:00 am (2200 GMT). This development occurs against the backdrop of ongoing geopolitical tensions between Taiwan and China, exacerbated by Beijing's longstanding claim that Taiwan is a part of its territory and its avowed commitment to using force if necessary to achieve reunification with the self-governed island.

China's military activities in the vicinity of Taiwan have escalated in recent years, particularly following the inauguration of Taiwan President Lai Ching-te last month, a leader viewed by Beijing as supportive of Taiwan's independence—a stance vehemently opposed by China. According to Taiwan's defense ministry, the latest maneuvers involved the deployment of 62 military aircraft in a single day, marking the highest number recorded this year. These flights were concentrated predominantly near Taipei, the capital of Taiwan.

The heightened military presence underscores the complex and volatile nature of the relationship between Taiwan and China, with Taiwan enhancing its defense capabilities and closely monitoring Chinese military movements amid concerns over Beijing's assertive policies towards the island. Taiwan, officially known as the Republic of China, has maintained self-governance since 1949 when the Chinese Civil War led to the retreat of the nationalist government to the island. Despite significant economic and cultural ties between Taiwan and China, political relations remain tense, with Taiwan seeking to assert its autonomy while China asserts its sovereignty claims.

This latest military activity by China near Taiwan is likely to further strain relations and raise international concerns about stability in the region, where the United States and other nations have longstanding interests in maintaining peace and security.
