A devastating crash in Tampa’s historic Ybor City early Saturday left four people dead and 11 injured after a car fleeing police slammed into a crowded bar.
Authorities identified the suspect as 22-year-old Silas Sampson, who now faces multiple felony charges including four counts of vehicular homicide and four counts of aggravated fleeing. He was booked into the Hillsborough County Jail shortly after the incident.
According to police, the silver sedan was first spotted by an air patrol unit driving recklessly and street racing around 12:40 am. Florida Highway Patrol attempted a PIT manoeuvre—a tactic used to spin out vehicles—but the driver managed to escape.
The chase ended tragically moments later when the car lost control near Bradley’s on 7th, a popular nightlife spot in Ybor City, crashing into pedestrians outside the bar.
Police confirmed that three people died at the scene, while a fourth succumbed to injuries at a nearby hospital. Two victims remain in critical condition, while several others sustained minor or moderate injuries.
“This was a senseless tragedy. Our hearts are with the victims’ families and all those impacted,” said Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw in a statement.
Mayor Jane Castor, who also served as Tampa’s first female police chief, expressed her condolences on social media, adding that the city will “do everything possible to ensure justice is served.”
The investigation remains ongoing, as authorities review footage and evidence from the scene.
In the wake of this tragedy, discussions are reignited over high-speed police pursuits, which have been under scrutiny due to the growing number of fatal outcomes nationwide.
