England has released three players – Jacob Bethell, Matthew Potts, and Josh Tongue – to participate in a day-night warmup match against the Australian Prime Minister's XI in Canberra. The announcement was made by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Monday.
These players were not part of England’s heavy eight-wicket defeat in Perth last week, which became the shortest Ashes test by overs bowled to produce a result since 1888. England’s team will now look to regroup, while the three players gain valuable match practice in the lead-up to the next fixtures.
The upcoming match is scheduled as a two-day day-night fixture, using the pink ball, and will start on Saturday. It serves as a key preparation opportunity for England’s younger players, giving them exposure to high-quality cricket under lights, which can differ significantly from regular day matches.
Jacob Bethell, Matthew Potts, and Josh Tongue will join the England Lions, the country’s second-tier representative team, for this encounter. The Lions have historically been an important step for players on the verge of breaking into the national side. This fixture allows them to test their skills against strong Australian opposition in challenging conditions.
Australia enters this period of the Ashes series with considerable confidence. The hosts have an outstanding record in day-night matches, having won 13 of their 14 tests played under lights. This includes all three recent day-night encounters against England, highlighting the challenge that Bethell, Potts, and Tongue will face in Canberra.
The ECB emphasized that this warmup match provides an excellent chance for the players to gain match fitness, adapt to pink-ball conditions, and experience the pressures of competitive cricket in front of Australian crowds. This opportunity is seen as vital for the development of emerging players as they look to establish themselves in international cricket.
The Ashes series continues to capture global attention, and England’s management is carefully planning how to rotate players while keeping them sharp for key tests. With Australia’s dominance in recent day-night matches, this fixture in Canberra offers a valuable learning experience and a chance for England’s squad to refine their skills under challenging conditions.
The two-day match against the Australian Prime Minister’s XI is also a traditional highlight for touring teams, offering competitive yet slightly lower-pressure cricket compared to full international tests. Players like Bethell, Potts, and Tongue can use this platform to impress selectors and stake their claim for inclusion in upcoming Ashes tests.
Fans and analysts will watch closely to see how these players perform against a strong Australian lineup. The warmup match is an opportunity to gain confidence, adjust to Australian pitches, and prepare for the intensity of the next full Ashes fixture.
