Amazon working on GPT-4o-Like Multimodal AI Model to plans with OpenAI

Amazon is reportedly in the process of developing a new artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot known internally as Metis, aiming to compete directly with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. According to a detailed report from Business Insider, Metis is poised to perform a wide array of generative AI tasks such as text creation, query response, and image generation.

Expected to launch around September this year, Amazon plans to unveil Metis during its annual Devices and Services event. The initiative underscores Amazon’s strategic move to challenge ChatGPT with its own AI model, leveraging extensive capabilities in natural language processing and multimodal AI.

Named after the Greek goddess of wisdom and deep thought, Metis will operate through a web browser, similar to other popular AI chatbots. It will be powered by Amazon’s advanced proprietary AI model, Olympus, surpassing the Titan large language model (LLM) used in existing Amazon products. Notably, Metis will integrate multimodal AI capabilities, enabling both text and image generation within the same platform, a feature not fully integrated in ChatGPT without additional subscriptions.

Metis will utilize a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) AI framework, enhancing response quality by combining text generation with data retrieval from extensive datasets. This framework will also enable Metis to access and retrieve real-time information from the internet, such as stock prices, a capability often challenging for other AI chatbots. However, existing models like ChatGPT and Gemini already offer similar functionalities based on the GPT-4 architecture.

The development of Metis is spearheaded by Amazon’s Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) division, led by Senior Vice President and Head Scientist Rohit Prasad, with reported involvement from Amazon CEO Andy Jassy. The project aims to position Amazon at the forefront of the AI chatbot market by offering advanced features that appeal to users seeking a robust AI assistant.

Industry experts and consumers are keenly anticipating the launch of Metis, viewing it as a potential disruptor in the AI chatbot landscape and a significant milestone in Amazon’s AI innovation efforts.
