Many people who use Amazon Prime are being targeted by scammers. These scammers pretend to be Amazon officials. They call or email users and try to steal their personal information, such as login details, bank account numbers, and even their social security numbers. This shocking news was shared by the New York Post.
Why Is This Happening?
In recent months, there has been a huge increase in these scam attacks. Because of this, Amazon and many cybersecurity experts have given warnings to people. They said that thousands of fake websites and phone numbers have been taken down this year. These websites and numbers were used by scammers to cheat people.

How Many Scam Websites And Numbers Were Removed?
Amazon said that in the year 2024 alone, they have removed over 55,000 phishing websites and 12,000 phone numbers. These websites and phone numbers were connected to scams where people were pretending to be Amazon officials. Amazon shared this information in an email alert earlier this month.
What Type Of Fake Messages Are Used?
Most of these scams involve fake emails or calls. The messages say things like:
Your order has been confirmed.
There is a problem with your account.
When users see these messages, they get worried and click on the links given in the emails or answer the calls. Then, the scammers ask them to share sensitive information like passwords or bank details. This way, scammers steal personal data and use it for bad purposes.
How Do These Emails Look Like?
According to a company called Malwarebytes, some of these fake emails tell users that:
They have unexpected charges on their account.
Their Prime subscription is auto-renewing at a very high price.
These emails usually have a link saying “cancel subscription”. If users click on this link, it takes them to a fake Amazon login page. If they enter their email and password there, scammers get their login details. They can then use these details to access Amazon accounts and also other accounts that use the same password.
What Did Amazon Officials Say?
Dharmesh Mehta, who is the Vice President of Selling Partner Services at Amazon, said that scammers who pretend to be Amazon put consumers at risk. He said these scams do not happen inside Amazon’s platform but outside it. However, Amazon continues to invest in protecting its customers and also teaching them how to stay safe.

Five Most Common Amazon Scam Tactics
Amazon has listed the five main scam tricks that scammers use:
1. Prime Membership Scams
Scammers send messages saying there is a problem with your Prime subscription. They ask for payment details to fix the issue.
2. Account Suspension Alerts
They threaten users that their Amazon account will be deleted or suspended if they do not take immediate action. They give a link or phone number that connects to scammers.
3. Fake Order Confirmations
These messages say you have ordered something that you don’t remember ordering. They ask you to click a link to cancel or check the order. That link is fake and steals your information.
4. Tech Support Hoaxes
Scammers pretend to be Amazon tech support. They ask users to visit fake websites or call fake helpline numbers to fix their issues.
5. Fake Job Offers
They offer fake jobs at Amazon through unofficial websites or calls. They ask for money or important documents in return for the fake job offer.
What Is Amazon Doing To Protect Users?
Amazon said it never asks for payment details over calls or emails. It also never asks users to pay through gift cards. To keep users safe, Amazon is adding new tools. For example, now users can see verified Amazon logos in their Gmail or Yahoo inbox. This will help them know which emails are really from Amazon.
How Can Users Stay Safe From These Scams?
Amazon and cybersecurity experts gave some tips to stay safe:
Always visit Amazon only by opening the official website or app.
Check your Message Center on Amazon for real communications.
Enable two-step verification in your Amazon security settings. This adds extra protection.
If you get any suspicious emails, messages, or calls, report them directly to Amazon.
How Big Is The Scam Problem?
According to Forbes, text-based refund scams have increased more than 50 times in just the past two weeks. These scams are happening a lot in the US and Europe. Experts say that the problem is becoming very serious and is now “out of control.”
Why Should People Care?
These scams are dangerous because they can:
Empty your bank account.
Steal your personal information and identity.
Cause mental stress and worry.
Affect your other online accounts if you use the same password.
Stay Alert, Stay Safe
It is very important for all Amazon users, especially Prime members, to stay careful. Never share your password, bank details, or social security number with anyone who calls or emails you claiming to be Amazon. Always check the official website or app for any notifications or alerts.
Amazon is working hard to stop these scammers by removing their websites and phone numbers. But users also have to be smart and avoid falling into these traps. Remember, if any message looks suspicious, it is better to ignore it or check with Amazon directly before taking any action.
