Amazon.com Inc. is preparing to launch a second major round of layoffs as early as next week, a move that could eliminate around 30,000 corporate roles and deepen the company’s efforts to simplify its management structure and cut costs.
According to reports by Reuters and Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter, the job cuts are expected to roll out in phases. While the final numbers could still change, teams across Amazon Web Services (AWS), Prime Video, Retail and Human Resources are seen as the most affected.
If confirmed, this would mark one of the largest workforce reductions in the company’s history. Amazon is currently the second-largest employer in the United States after Walmart, making any large-scale cuts closely watched across the tech and retail sectors.
The planned layoffs come only a few months after Amazon announced the elimination of 14,000 roles. At that time, the company had already warned employees and investors that more reductions could follow in 2026 as it looked for “additional places we can remove layers” within the organization. Sources said managers were given the option to carry out some cuts in October or wait until the start of the new year.
This latest move also echoes Amazon’s cost-cutting drive in late 2022 and early 2023, when the Seattle-based company cut about 27,000 jobs in multiple rounds. Those layoffs were aimed at correcting overexpansion during the pandemic boom, when demand for online shopping and cloud services surged.
While Amazon has not officially confirmed the exact scale of the new layoffs, the direction is clear: the company is continuing to tighten its structure, reduce bureaucracy and focus spending on its most profitable and strategic businesses.
For employees, the coming weeks are likely to bring uncertainty, especially in corporate and support functions. For the broader tech industry, Amazon’s move is another sign that even the biggest players are still under pressure to control costs and operate more efficiently after years of rapid hiring.
