Meghalaya’s fast bowler Akash Choudhary made history in the Ranji Trophy by hitting six sixes in one over and scoring the fastest fifty in first-class cricket. The 25-year-old achieved this incredible feat on the second day of the Plate Group match against Arunachal Pradesh in Surat. His explosive innings stunned everyone and brought him into an elite list of cricketers who have achieved this rare milestone.
Choudhary became only the third player in first-class cricket history to hit six sixes in a single over. Before him, this was done only by two legends — Sir Garry Sobers and Ravi Shastri. He joined this prestigious group by smashing left-arm spinner Limar Dabi for six consecutive sixes in the 126th over of the innings. Each ball flew over the boundary, displaying his fearless batting and remarkable timing.
Not only did Choudhary hit six sixes, but he also recorded the fastest fifty in first-class cricket history. He completed his half-century in just 11 balls, breaking the previous record of 12 balls set by Wayne White in 2012 for Leicestershire. Choudhary’s fifty came in only nine minutes, making it the second-fastest fifty in first-class cricket in terms of time taken. The only quicker one was by Clive Inman, who reached his fifty in eight minutes back in 1965.
When Choudhary came to bat at number eight, Meghalaya’s score was already high at 576 for 6. He started cautiously with a dot ball and two singles before going on an all-out attack. In the 126th over bowled by Limar Dabi, he sent every delivery flying for six, creating chaos for the Arunachal bowlers and delight for his teammates. His confidence grew with every hit, and the crowd in Surat cheered louder each time the ball went over the ropes.
Choudhary did not stop after six sixes in one over. In the very next over, bowled by off-spinner TNR Mohith, he smashed two more back-to-back sixes to reach his fifty. In total, he hit eight sixes in a row, a display of extraordinary hitting power. He finished his innings unbeaten on 50 runs off 14 balls, with the last three deliveries he faced being dot balls. Meghalaya then declared their innings at 628 for 6.
Choudhary showed his all-round talent by performing with the ball too. In Arunachal Pradesh’s first innings, he took one wicket as Meghalaya bowled them out for just 73 runs. Enforcing the follow-on, Choudhary continued to shine by claiming two more wickets in the second innings. At the end of the day, Arunachal Pradesh were struggling at 29 for 3, with Meghalaya in complete control.
Before this record-breaking performance, Akash Choudhary had played 30 first-class matches, scoring 503 runs at an average of 14.37. He had two half-centuries to his name and was known mainly for his bowling rather than his batting. However, this innings has now changed how people see him. He has also played 28 List-A matches and 30 T20 games, showing consistency across all formats.
Choudhary had already shown signs of improvement with the bat in his previous match against Bihar, where he scored an unbeaten 60 off 62 balls, including four sixes. His confidence from that innings clearly carried into the game against Arunachal Pradesh. With the ball, he continues to be a key player for Meghalaya, having taken 87 wickets in first-class cricket at an average of 29.97, along with 37 wickets in List-A and 28 in T20s.
Choudhary’s heroics not only brought him fame but also highlighted Meghalaya’s growing presence in Indian domestic cricket. His achievement brought pride to his team and state, inspiring many young cricketers. Few expected a lower-order batter to create such a record, but Choudhary proved that determination and confidence can lead to historic moments.
Akash Choudhary’s innings will be remembered as one of the most explosive in Indian domestic cricket. By joining the company of legends like Garry Sobers and Ravi Shastri, he has written his name in the history books. His 11-ball fifty and eight consecutive sixes will inspire players across the cricketing world and remain a proud moment for Meghalaya cricket.
