Ajman has announced a big change in the way it will manage three of its most important sectors — tourism, culture, and media. The emirate’s Ruler, Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, has issued a new law in 2025 to combine two government bodies into one single and powerful department called the Ajman Department of Tourism, Culture and Media.

This move is not just an administrative update. It is a strategic step that reflects Ajman’s ambition to strengthen its position on the global stage and prepare for a future where tourism, heritage, and media will play key roles in shaping its economy and identity.

Why the Change Was Needed

Until now, Ajman has had two different departments:

* The Department of Tourism Development, which promoted tourism and looked after hotels, events, and visitor services.

* The Department of Culture and Media which managed cultural initiatives, heritage projects, and regulated media activity.

Having separate departments sometimes meant overlapping work, divided budgets, and slower decision-making. By creating one unified body, the government believes it can save resources, improve coordination, and move faster in delivering services.

This change also comes at a time when Gulf countries are competing to attract international tourists, investments, and global media attention. By uniting these three sectors, Ajman hopes to build a stronger identity and offer a more attractive environment for visitors, residents, and businesses.

Leadership and Appointments

To ensure the department has strong guidance, Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Humaid Al Nuaimi has been appointed as the Chairman. He has long experience in developing Ajman’s tourism vision and is expected to lead the department with a clear strategy.

Alongside him, Mahmood Alhashmi has been appointed as the Director-General. He will take charge of the day-to-day operations, manage staff, and ensure that projects are executed effectively.

These appointments highlight the importance of leadership continuity — experienced figures who understand Ajman’s needs are now responsible for taking this new department forward.

What Will Happen to the Old Departments?

All the rights, responsibilities, and projects of the two older departments will now shift to the new one. Importantly, employees from the previous bodies will keep their jobs, salaries, and benefits. This ensures a smooth transition without disrupting ongoing projects or causing job losses.

The government budget for 2025 that was originally planned for the older departments will now go directly to this new department, giving it the resources to operate effectively from the very beginning.

Main Objectives of the New Department

The new department is designed to:

1. Strengthen Ajman’s tourism industry

* Develop modern policies and laws to guide growth.

* Promote Ajman as a welcoming and unique destination.

* Attract global investors to build hotels, resorts, and attractions.

* Organize international and local events to draw visitors.

2. Preserve and promote culture and heritage

* Protect historical sites, monuments, and museums.

* Organize cultural festivals and exhibitions.

* Support creative talents like artists, musicians, and writers.

* Safeguard the emirate’s traditions and identity for future generations.

3. Build a strong media environment

* Regulate and license media outlets.

* Encourage investment in modern media platforms.

* Ensure that content follows ethical and professional standards.

* Use media as a tool to share Ajman’s story with the world.

Broader Vision for Ajman

This department is more than a government office — it is part of Ajman’s bigger vision for growth. By bringing together tourism, culture, and media, the emirate wants to:

* Increase GDP by attracting tourists and investors.

* Create jobs for local citizens, especially young people interested in creative and media careers.

* Promote coexistence and cultural understanding by hosting international events.

* Build a global reputation as a destination that balances tradition with modern innovation.

This vision also ties into the UAE’s wider national goals, where all emirates are working on diversifying their economies beyond oil and focusing on tourism, culture, and knowledge-based industries.

Global Competition and Ajman’s Role

Across the Gulf, cities like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Riyadh are heavily investing in tourism and culture. While Ajman is smaller, it is positioning itself as a boutique destination that offers:

* Authentic Emirati culture.

* A quieter and more family-friendly environment.

* Unique historical and heritage sites.

* Opportunities for investors seeking emerging markets.

By improving its media landscape, Ajman also hopes to gain more international visibility, attract film projects, and host creative industries that can boost its reputation.

Future Plans and Implementation

According to the law, the department’s headquarters will be in Ajman city, but new offices may be set up inside or even outside the emirate if approved. This means Ajman could eventually have tourism or media offices abroad, helping it promote itself globally.

The law states that the new department will officially start 90 days after publication in the Official Gazette. During this time, regulations will be prepared, employees will be transferred, and new strategies will be finalized.

Older laws that created the former departments will be cancelled, but the existing regulations will continue until new ones are introduced. This ensures continuity and prevents legal or operational gaps.

Long-Term Impact

This step is expected to have long-lasting effects on Ajman’s development:

* Tourism could become one of the emirate’s main economic drivers.

* Cultural preservation will ensure that heritage is protected even as the city modernizes.

* Media growth could attract new companies and give Ajman more global exposure.

For residents, it means more cultural events, job opportunities, and a stronger identity. For investors and tourists, it signals that Ajman is ready to welcome them with better services and infrastructure.

Ajman’s decision to form the Department of Tourism, Culture and Media is more than a structural reform — it is a statement of ambition. By uniting three powerful sectors under one roof, Ajman is preparing to step confidently into the future, balancing its rich traditions with modern innovation.

The coming years will show how this bold move shapes Ajman’s economy, identity, and global standing, but the foundation has been set for a stronger, more connected future.
