In a rare candid admission, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged that Google’s latest AI, Gemini 3, might have gained a temporary edge in the race for artificial intelligence dominance. Altman’s internal memo, shared with staff and reported by The Information, highlighted the strong capabilities of Gemini 3, which have drawn attention from developers for its design and coding prowess.

“Google’s new model may create temporary economic headwinds for our company,” Altman wrote, adding that OpenAI is “catching up fast” and remains on track to regain leadership in the AI sector.

What Sets Gemini 3 Apart

Gemini 3 has impressed engineers for its efficiency in automating website creation, generating product prototypes, and coding — areas where OpenAI’s models previously excelled. The model’s seamless integration with Google’s search engine, productivity apps, and creative tools also gives it a visibility advantage, allowing it to reach millions of users effortlessly.

Experts say the model represents Google’s ongoing strategy to embed AI deeply across its ecosystem, leveraging both infrastructure and financial strength. With a market valuation of $3.5 trillion and over $70 billion in free cash flow last year, Google has the resources to aggressively scale AI research and deployment.

OpenAI’s Strategic Response

Despite the short-term challenge, Altman emphasized that OpenAI’s focus remains on the long-term mission of developing artificial superintelligence. He noted that the company is navigating multiple ambitious goals at once: maintaining top-tier research, building robust AI infrastructure, and delivering market-leading products.

Internal estimates indicate OpenAI could generate $13 billion in revenue this year, though scaling AI research is costly, with a cash burn rate nearing $100 billion. Altman reassured employees that the company’s foundation is solid and that temporary competitive pressures will not derail its larger vision.

The Wider AI Landscape

OpenAI is not just facing Google. Other competitors, like Anthropic with its Claude AI system, are also making strides in coding and natural language tasks, intensifying the competition in specialized AI tools. Altman’s memo underlined the need to remain focused on innovation while navigating the evolving market landscape.

For now, Gemini 3 has captured the spotlight, but OpenAI’s history of breakthroughs and Altman’s commitment to long-term goals suggest the battle for AI supremacy is far from over.
