In a startling revelation with wide-reaching implications for cybersecurity, US-based artificial intelligence company Anthropic announced that it successfully thwarted a large-scale cyberattack executed using its AI chatbot, Claude. The firm said Chinese state-sponsored hackers had exploited the chatbot to carry out automated attacks against approximately 30 organizations across the globe.
According to Anthropic, the attack represents “the first documented case of a large-scale AI cyberattack executed without substantial human intervention.” In a detailed blog post, the company emphasized that the incident underscores the urgent need for robust safeguards as AI agents increasingly become integral to critical operations.
AI Exploited for Cyber Espionage
The cyber campaign, detected in mid-September 2025, involved sophisticated tactics that relied heavily on the autonomous capabilities of Claude. Hackers reportedly manipulated the AI into inspecting infrastructure, generating exploit code, harvesting credentials, and organizing stolen data, all with minimal human supervision.
“The threat actor, whom we assess with high confidence as a Chinese state-sponsored group, manipulated our Claude Code tool into attempting infiltration into roughly thirty global targets and succeeded in a small number of cases,” Anthropic said. Targets included leading technology companies, major financial institutions, chemical manufacturers, and several government agencies.
To evade detection, the attackers broke the operation into smaller, seemingly harmless tasks and impersonated a legitimate cybersecurity firm performing defensive tests. This “jailbreaking” of Claude allowed it to operate outside its usual safety guardrails, effectively turning the AI into a semi-autonomous hacker.
Implications for Global Cybersecurity
Anthropic revealed that AI performed 80–90% of the attack, with human intervention needed only occasionally. While fully autonomous attacks remain rare due to occasional AI errors, the incident highlights how the barriers to conducting sophisticated cyberattacks are dropping sharply.
“The ability to leverage agentic AI for extended periods reduces the need for large teams of skilled hackers,” the company noted. Smaller or less experienced groups could now potentially conduct high-level cyber operations using AI, signaling a new era in cyber warfare and digital espionage.
Once detected, Anthropic conducted an internal investigation over ten days, blocking compromised accounts, alerting affected organizations, and coordinating with authorities to mitigate potential damage.
The incident has sparked global concern over the security of AI systems. Experts warn that as AI capabilities grow, so too does the potential for autonomous or semi-autonomous cyberattacks, posing threats not only to private organizations but also to national infrastructure.
Anthropic’s findings serve as a crucial warning for governments and corporations worldwide: AI offers unprecedented efficiency and power, but without rigorous security measures, it could be turned into a weapon against the very systems it is meant to assist.
The company concluded, “This event demonstrates that sophisticated AI-driven attacks are now a reality, and the cybersecurity community must adapt rapidly to address these emerging risks.”
