Afghan Earthquake Survivors Face Deadly Winter Without Proper Shelter

Villagers in Afghanistan’s northern provinces are facing an uphill battle as winter approaches, following a series of devastating earthquakes that have left thousands homeless. Survivors are struggling to find safe shelter, adequate clothing, and basic supplies to withstand freezing temperatures, highlighting a growing humanitarian crisis.

The latest earthquake, measuring 6.3 in magnitude, struck the Samangan and Balkh provinces, killing at least 27 people. The epicenter in Samangan’s Khulm district saw entire homes reduced to rubble. Residents like Gulabuddin are grieving for lost family members while coping with injuries and the loss of belongings. “Winter is coming. We have children aged four and five. Where can we go?” he said, describing the precarious situation for his family.

Two months earlier, a shallow magnitude 6.0 earthquake had killed over 2,200 people, making it one of the deadliest in recent Afghan history. In Kunar province, survivors like Bazarga Safay now live in overcrowded tents that are ill-equipped for the harsh winter. Many families, fearing aftershocks, sleep outdoors, exposing themselves to temperatures that could drop as low as -20°C (-4°F).

Aid remains insufficient. International organizations report limited assistance as major donors, including the United States, have withdrawn funding. While some camps have been established at the base of Mazar Dara mountain, 77 percent of survivors plan to stay in their villages through the winter due to financial constraints or lack of alternative shelter.

Taliban officials say reconstruction efforts are underway, with dozens of new houses planned. However, on-the-ground observations show minimal progress. Survivors emphasize the need to rebuild homes using concrete and bricks to prevent future collapses. “We want to rebuild our house in the same place, but not in the same way. Only concrete will work,” said Sayid Wali Safay.

With heavy rains turning dirt paths into muddy pools and winter temperatures approaching, Afghan earthquake survivors are confronting a dual threat: lingering aftershocks and the deadly cold. Immediate aid in the form of winter clothing, blankets, and sturdy shelter is critical to prevent further loss of life.
