The debate over limited working hours in the Hindi film industry continues to spark conversation across Bollywood. Triggered by reports of Deepika Padukone walking out of films like Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Spirit and the sequel to Kalki 2898 AD, the issue has split the industry. While many agree on the need for structured work hours, others believe such limitations are impractical.
The latest to weigh in is filmmaker Aditya Sarpotdar, director of the recently released horror-comedy Thamma. Speaking about the industry norm of long and unpredictable shooting schedules, Sarpotdar pointed out that working more than 12 hours a day is not just taxing but unfair.
"Many times, it is taken for granted that everyone will work 24 hours, and it takes a toll both physically and mentally. I think a 12-hour shift is very understandable and practical," he said, adding that anything beyond that puts excessive strain on cast and crew.
Sarpotdar also highlighted that Thamma star Rashmika Mandanna routinely works 12-hour shifts without complaint, but noted that the capacity to endure long hours should not be assumed of everyone. "If an actor and a director come on the same page, only then should they work together," he added.
Addressing Deepika Padukone's stance on fixed working hours, Sarpotdar urged the industry to consider the context behind her demands, rather than applying a blanket rule. "There is no sense in giving a generic statement to it. Every actor, project, and situation is different," he said.
The filmmaker also shared how he accommodated veteran actor Paresh Rawal during the shooting of Thamma, ensuring his health conditions were prioritized. "It is our responsibility to take care of him," Sarpotdar stated.
Rashmika Mandanna, who has earlier spoken about the toll of overworking, reiterated her support for limited working hours, advocating for a structure akin to 9-to-5 office jobs. She emphasized the need for personal time, rest, and a balanced lifestyle, calling overwork "unsustainable."
Thamma, starring Ayushmann Khurrana, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, and Paresh Rawal alongside Rashmika, has grossed ₹121.80 crore domestically since its Diwali release.
Rashmika Mandanna will next appear in the Telugu romantic drama The Girlfriend, directed by Rahul Ravindran, set to release this Friday.
