Australian First Nations Fashion Takes Center Stage in India

The Capital turned into a cultural runway recently as Australian First Nations fashion took over the stage in a vibrant fusion of heritage and modern style. Organized by the Australian High Commission in collaboration with Kirrikin and the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI), the event celebrated the indigenous artistry of Australia with India’s thriving fashion ecosystem.

The showcase began with a captivating traditional Aboriginal dance, a practice rooted in over 60,000 years of history. The performance featured dancers moving to rhythmic beats inspired by native animals like the kangaroo and emu, offering a glimpse into the storytelling traditions that lie at the heart of Australia’s First Nations communities. The immersive presentation set the tone for a night where fashion and culture beautifully intertwined.

At the center of the runway was Kirrikin—meaning “Sunday’s best clothes” in the Wonnarua language—a luxury label founded by Indigenous designer Amanda Healy. Renowned for transforming original First Nations artworks into luxurious contemporary fabrics, Kirrikin’s latest collection showcased a rich visual language of identity and storytelling. Designed in Australia and manufactured in Noida, the garments reflected the growing creative partnership between both nations.

“Fashion has always been a bridge and this showcase is a true meeting of cultures,” said Sunil Sethi, Chairman of FDCI, acknowledging the increasing global appreciation for indigenous craftsmanship and storytelling.

The evening marked a milestone for Amanda Healy as Kirrikin celebrated its 10th anniversary, coinciding with its debut on an Indian runway. The collection titled ‘Evoke’ featured a mix of tailored blazers, fluid wrap dresses, soft crepe skirts, and structured trousers—each piece bringing First Nations art forms into contemporary silhouettes. Inspired by the Noongar people of southwest Western Australia, the designs were crafted in fine viscose crepe and boasted hand-painted prints that echoed the landscapes, spirits, and stories of the region.

“I chose India as my major supplier because of the sheer fabulousness of your fabrics,” Healy said, highlighting the synergy between the countries. The evening stood not just as a fashion moment, but as a cultural exchange, transforming ancient traditions into global fashion statements.
