Abu Dhabi has been chosen to host the 2025 Pritzker Architecture Prize ceremony, a world-famous event that celebrates the best in architecture. This is the first time the event will take place in the UAE or the Middle East, marking a proud moment for the region. The announcement was made by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi).

The Pritzker Architecture Prize is the highest award in the field of architecture. It is given every year to a living architect whose work shows great talent, creativity, and dedication. The winner’s work must have made a big and lasting impact on people and the places we live in, by using the art of building in meaningful ways.

Abu Dhabi being selected as the host city shows how it is becoming a global centre for creative minds. The city is known for its efforts to combine tradition and modern design while also focusing on sustainability. Over the years, Abu Dhabi has built a strong image as a place that supports culture, innovation, and forward-thinking ideas in architecture.

His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, said,“We are very proud that Abu Dhabi has been chosen to host the 2025 Pritzker Prize. This shows that the world sees Abu Dhabi as a cultural centre. By hosting this event, we are giving space for big ideas that can shape the cities of the future. This supports our long-term goal to keep creativity, open discussion, and sustainability at the heart of how we grow. We believe that architecture has the power to improve lives and build strong communities.”

Abu Dhabi is already home to famous buildings designed by past winners of the Pritzker Prize. These include:

  • The Louvre Abu Dhabi, designed by Jean Nouvel (Pritzker winner in 2008)

  • The Zayed National Museum, opening soon and designed by Lord Norman Foster (Pritzker winner in 1999)

  • The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, designed by Frank Gehry (Pritzker winner in 1989)

These buildings show how Abu Dhabi blends modern ideas with cultural heritage. They are part of DCT Abu Dhabi’s mission to protect the city’s rich history, while also promoting creativity and innovation for a better future.

As part of the 2025 event, there will also be a public panel discussion at the Cultural Foundation on May 3, 2025. The discussion will be led by Liu Jiakun, who will be awarded the Pritzker Prize that year. He will be joined by previous winners:

  • Riken Yamamoto (2024)

  • David Chipperfield (2023)

  • Francis Kéré (2022)

These leading architects will talk about how architecture can celebrate different cultures and improve the way we live. They will also share their thoughts on the future of buildings and cities.

This exciting event is another step in Abu Dhabi’s journey to become a world leader in architecture, culture, and creativity.
