The Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility) has started the Middle East and North Africa’s first pilot project for autonomous logistics and freight trucks. The project is being carried out in partnership with global autonomous vehicle systems company Autotech and AD Ports Group.
The pilot operation is taking place inside Khalifa Economic Zones Abu Dhabi (KEZAD), within a controlled industrial and logistics environment. Dedicated routes have been approved under regulatory frameworks and operational standards to ensure safe testing.
Focus on Safety and Real-World Testing
During 2025, developers worked under the supervision of Abu Dhabi Mobility to adapt artificial intelligence-based autonomous driving systems to local road conditions and logistics needs. The aim is to ensure safe, smooth, and efficient truck operations while meeting the highest safety and performance standards.
The project is designed to assess the technology’s readiness for real-world deployment. It also helps authorities evaluate how autonomous freight transport can improve supply chain efficiency and operational performance across economic and industrial zones.
Strengthening Smart Mobility in Abu Dhabi
Dr Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli, Acting Director General of Abu Dhabi Mobility, said the initiative marks an important regulatory milestone in advancing the emirate’s smart mobility ecosystem. He explained that the Centre is expanding autonomous systems beyond passenger transport to include freight and logistics services.
He added that pilot projects like this allow authorities to test new technologies within safe and structured frameworks. The data collected will help shape future policies and regulations based on practical experience.
Supporting UAE’s AI Vision
The initiative also supports the UAE National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2031, which aims to position the country as a global leader in artificial intelligence.
Abu Dhabi Mobility reaffirmed its commitment to working with local and international partners to promote responsible innovation. The goal is to balance advanced technology with safety, sustainability, and the long-term economic needs of the emirate.
With this pilot, Abu Dhabi strengthens its position as a regional hub for smart mobility solutions and autonomous transport systems.
