Abu Dhabi, UAE – The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has successfully completed its latest aerial survey, covering more than 8,000 square kilometres of marine habitat. This survey is part of EAD’s long-term efforts to protect marine animals and their natural environment, showing the emirate’s strong commitment to environmental care and making Abu Dhabi a leader in marine conservation in the region.
EAD is the only organisation in the Middle East that regularly carries out such detailed and long-term monitoring of marine life through aerial surveys. Since 2004, the agency has been conducting these important surveys to gather useful information. This information helps EAD develop smart conservation plans and manage marine resources in a way that protects them for the future.
Positive Signs for Dugongs and Sea Turtles
According to Ahmed Al Hashmi, Executive Director of the Terrestrial and Marine Biodiversity Sector at EAD, the results of the recent survey show great progress. He shared that there has been a more than 20% increase in the dugong population and a 30% rise in the number of sea turtles compared to previous years.
“These results prove that our science-based approach and use of advanced technology are working well,” said Al Hashmi. “We are proud of these achievements, and they motivate us to keep going with our mission to protect our natural heritage.”
The aerial survey was conducted by a skilled team of six researchers. Over the course of 26 flying hours, they covered a distance of 1,630 kilometres to observe and record marine animals from the sky. The survey focused mainly on dugongs and sea turtles, but it also included dolphins, whales, sharks, rays, and birds.
How the Survey Helps
These surveys are carried out following international best practices. They are a trusted way to track changes in marine life, understand where different species live, and monitor their behaviours such as migration and breeding. The information gathered also helps EAD monitor human activities that might harm marine animals and make better decisions to protect these species and their habitats.

The 2024 survey estimates that there are now over 3,500 dugongs living in Abu Dhabi’s waters. Interestingly, about 20% of the dugongs seen were mother-calf pairs, showing that the population is growing in a healthy way. These numbers make Abu Dhabi the second-largest dugong habitat in the world, just after Australia. EAD’s strict rules, such as banning harmful fishing nets, have helped keep this rare species safe.
In addition, the survey found that the sea turtle population has reached around 8,000, which is a 30% increase compared to 2015. This shows that EAD’s work to protect nesting areas and manage marine protected zones is bringing strong results.
The survey also noted some rare sightings, including a Bryde’s whale near the Barakah area, Hammerhead sharks in Al Dhafra, and many types of sharks, rays, and dolphins. These sightings are proof of the rich marine life in the waters of Abu Dhabi.
A Clear Message for the Future
These regular aerial surveys are an important part of EAD’s work to make sure that Abu Dhabi continues to be a world leader in environmental conservation. The information collected not only supports local planning but also helps set a strong example for other countries in the region on how to care for marine life.
Through these efforts, Abu Dhabi is not just protecting its present—it is building a better, more sustainable future for generations to come.
