In celebration of World Organ Donation Day, the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) has announced that over 800 organ transplant procedures have been successfully conducted across Abu Dhabi’s healthcare facilities since the inception of the National Programme for Donation and Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissue – Hayat (Hayat) in 2017, up until the end of 2023.

This milestone reflects a substantial 56 percent increase in organ donations through the Hayat programme, alongside a 36 percent rise in organ transplants within Abu Dhabi in 2023 compared to the previous year. The successful transplants include 422 kidney transplants, 259 liver transplants, 41 lung transplants, 22 heart transplants, 14 pancreas transplants, and 51 simultaneous or multi-organ transplants. These procedures have been facilitated by both post-mortem and living donors, utilizing advanced techniques such as robotic surgeries and state-of-the-art medical technologies.

Her Excellency Dr. Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of DoH, expressed pride in Abu Dhabi’s achievements, stating, “The advancements in Abu Dhabi’s organ transplantation sector highlight our exceptional capabilities. With the guidance of our visionary leadership, the emirate has emerged as a global leader in organ transplantation, underpinned by innovative infrastructure, committed healthcare professionals, and premier medical facilities. We are dedicated to enhancing our organ transplantation services further, reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s standing as a global healthcare pioneer.”

Dr. Al Ghaithi emphasized the profound impact of organ donation, describing it as an act of immense generosity and community solidarity. “Organ donation is a profound act of humanity that offers hope and significantly improves the lives of recipients. It symbolizes remarkable altruism by those who choose to donate, whether living or deceased, and reflects the deep compassion of their families who, amidst their sorrow, contribute to giving others a new chance at life.”

Organ transplant procedures in Abu Dhabi are conducted at four major healthcare institutions: Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, Burjeel Medical City, and Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City.

The DoH urges community members to engage with the Hayat national programme and consider participating in this life-saving initiative. Abu Dhabi continues to advance its role as a leader in healthcare and life sciences innovation, fostering global collaborations to enhance community health and safety.
