The Department of Finance in Abu Dhabi (DoF) has started the 2026 Budget Cycle with a big event. More than 450 senior officials from 65 government departments across Abu Dhabi came together for this important meeting.
This year is special because Abu Dhabi is fully using a new way of planning the budget called the Performance-Based Budgeting (PBB) Model. This model connects government spending directly to the goals of each department. This means the government can improve services and help society more effectively. The model also makes the budgeting process clear, based on facts and data, and follows the best global practices supported by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

At the event, many important talks took place about the main ideas of the 2026 budget. These talks focused on how to grow the financial sector in line with the government’s goals. The Department of Finance wants all government departments to work together, be open, and use new ideas to make sure money is spent on projects that bring real results. This fits with Abu Dhabi’s bigger plan for the future.
The event also had many interactive sessions where officials discussed the latest trends in managing public money and budgets around the world. These ideas will help Abu Dhabi stay competitive and move toward a faster, smarter, and more creative economy.
Her Excellency Buthaina Al Mazrouei, Director General of Government Financial Affairs at DoF, said, “The 2026 Budget Cycle is an important step for us. It helps us build a financial system that focuses on people’s well-being. This event continues the progress we made last year and shows how important the Department of Finance is in keeping our finances strong.”She added, “With the support of our wise leaders, we are building a financial system that supports Abu Dhabi’s growth goals. We give government departments the right tools to plan wisely and based on data. We want to see real and clear results. Our strong teamwork and commitment to excellence will help make Abu Dhabi a world leader in smart financial management and sustainability.”
During the event, many new ideas were shared about how to use resources in the best way. This is very important for keeping the economy growing and improving the quality of life for people. The event also marks the official start for government departments to prepare their budgets for the next year. They will work within a clear plan that matches national priorities and strategies for different sectors
This year, the Department of Finance also introduced the Budget Excellence Award. This award will honor government departments that perform very well in budget planning and management. The award focuses on six important values: teamwork, openness, innovation, efficiency, impact, and excellence. It aims to encourage all departments to keep improving and work in line with the government’s goals for a strong and lasting economy.
The Department of Finance has also created a communication plan for the entire budget cycle. This plan covers everything from early planning to following up on the budget’s implementation. It ensures that all messages are clear and match the highest standards of financial governance. No News
