Abu Dhabi Highlights AgriFood Growth and Water Abundance at Future Food-Tech Summit in Chicago

A high-level delegation from Abu Dhabi, led by the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), participated in the Future-Food Tech Summit in Chicago, showcasing the newly launched AgriFood Growth and Water Abundance (AGWA) cluster. This initiative was unveiled by His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council.

AGWA, spearheaded by the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (ADDED) and ADIO, aims to address global challenges related to food shortages and water scarcity. It seeks to become a prominent global hub for innovative food, ingredients, and water-efficient technologies.

The Abu Dhabi delegation at the Future-Food Tech Summit included senior representatives from ADIO, Hub71 (Abu Dhabi's global tech ecosystem), the Technology Innovation Institute (TII), and the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA). Their participation underscores Abu Dhabi's commitment to fostering innovation and collaboration in the global food industry.

Since its launch, AGWA has garnered significant partnerships with leading Abu Dhabi research centers, including the Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), ADIA Lab, Khalifa University, and United Arab Emirates University (UAEU). These collaborations aim to accelerate research and talent development in tackling food and water challenges worldwide.

Furthermore, ADIO, ADAFSA, and the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (ADQCC) have announced joint efforts to streamline regulatory approvals and support mechanisms for advancements in agriculture, food safety, and water management.

Key infrastructure partners such as Abu Dhabi Ports Company, Abu Dhabi Airports Company, Abu Dhabi Distribution Company (ADDC), and Masdar City have also pledged collaboration to create a conducive environment for AGWA cluster companies.

At the summit, agreements were announced with pioneers in food innovation, including partnerships with Believer Meats for cultivated meat production and Swiss-based NUOS for alternative protein manufacturing facilities in Abu Dhabi.

Fatima Al Dhaheri, Head of the AGWA Cluster, emphasized the strategic alliances forged during the U.S. tour, highlighting opportunities for global collaboration in food and water innovation. She stressed AGWA's potential to drive economic growth, create jobs, and attract substantial investments in Abu Dhabi's economy.

During a breakout session at the Future Food-Tech Summit, ADIO discussed Abu Dhabi's role in establishing a sustainable global hub for novel food solutions and ensuring food and water security. The delegation's U.S. tour, which also included visits to San Francisco and Los Angeles, aimed to showcase AGWA's vision and attract international interest and investment.

AGWA is projected to contribute significantly to Abu Dhabi's economy, with forecasts indicating AED90 billion in GDP growth, the creation of over 60,000 new jobs, and AED128 billion in investments.

This initiative underscores Abu Dhabi's commitment to innovation-driven economic diversification and its role as a leader in addressing critical global challenges in food security and sustainable water management.
