Under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), the emirate has reached a major milestone in protecting marine life.
To mark World Oceans Day, the EAD announced that Abu Dhabi’s Sustainable Fisheries Index has risen to 97.4% by the end of 2024. This is a huge jump from just 8.9% in 2018. For the sixth year in a row, Abu Dhabi has shown strong progress in protecting fish and marine life through careful planning and monitoring.
His Highness Sheikh Hamdan said that this success shows how dedicated Abu Dhabi is to protecting its natural resources. He praised the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi for its hard work in looking after marine life and helping the environment while also supporting economic growth. He added that Abu Dhabi aims to be a global leader in balancing development and sustainability.

Her Excellency Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of EAD, said that this high score proves Abu Dhabi is doing a great job in taking care of its environment. She explained that the agency uses the latest science and global standards to bring fish populations back to healthy levels and protect sea life. She also said that making decisions based on scientific data helps protect nature for future generations.
EAD’s recent work in monitoring the sea has also led to some exciting discoveries. For example, 55 “nuaimi” fish, which have not been seen often in recent years, were caught. The white-spotted grouper was recorded for the first time in Abu Dhabi and is now listed in the international Fish Base database. Other rare fish like the large-scaled triggerfish and the spotted oceanic triggerfish were also spotted. More large fish are being seen too, which is a sign that the waters are getting healthier.
To support these efforts, EAD has created strong rules to manage fishing. These rules help control commercial fishing and also introduce new rules for people who fish for fun. The agency has also set up six marine reserves as part of the Sheikh Zayed Protected Areas Network. Fishing in these areas is either limited or not allowed.
EAD is also working on projects like coral gardening and building artificial reefs through the Abu Dhabi Coral Gardens initiative. These steps help grow more fish and support the marine environment.
With all these efforts, Abu Dhabi is showing that it is serious about saving marine life and building a better, greener future.
