Former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) star Aaron Finch has highlighted the root of the franchise's woes in IPL 2024, suggesting that their struggles trace back to the auction itself, where they failed to secure a world-class spinner. Despite rebranding as Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the change in name hasn't translated into a change in fortune, with RCB teetering on the brink of elimination from the playoffs race this season. Despite boasting star players like Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, Faf du Plessis, Cameron Green, and Mohammed Siraj, RCB's campaign has been marred by inconsistency.

With the halfway point of the season looming, RCB's qualification prospects appear precarious. Overreliance on Kohli and Dinesh Karthik in batting and inconsistent performances from Faf du Plessis, Glenn Maxwell, and Cameron Green have compounded their woes. Moreover, their bowling department has failed to deliver, despite significant investment in players like Alzarri Joseph, Reece Topley, and Lockie Ferguson. Even the stalwart Mohammed Siraj has struggled to contain runs, exacerbating RCB's bowling woes.
The collective failures have left RCB languishing at the bottom of the points table, with just one win in eight matches. Finch, who captained Australia to victory in the 2021 T20 World Cup, pointed out the crucial misstep at the auction, emphasizing the lack of a quality spinner in RCB's lineup. He particularly highlighted the absence of a reliable spinner like Sunil Narine, whose effectiveness was evident in a recent match against Kolkata Knight Riders.
Finch also criticized RCB's utilization of Cameron Green, whom they acquired at great expense. Deploying Green in the middle order, instead of his preferred opening position, was deemed a questionable move by Finch. He argued that RCB's failure to play Green in his comfort zone has hindered his ability to contribute effectively to the team's success.
Additionally, Finch lamented Glenn Maxwell's underwhelming form, stating that the lack of impact from key players has further hampered RCB's chances this season. As they prepare to face Sunrisers Hyderabad in their next match, RCB must address these underlying issues to salvage their campaign. In their previous encounter with SRH, RCB fell short in a high-scoring contest, highlighting the need for improvements in both batting and bowling departments.
