A strong earthquake shook Bangladesh on Friday morning, causing panic, damage, and loss of life across several districts. The quake, measured at 5.5 magnitude, struck at 10:38 am near Narsingdi, a city located about 33 km from the capital, Dhaka.
The sudden tremor created fear and chaos, especially because many people were at home enjoying their weekly day off. In several areas of Dhaka, people rushed out of buildings in shock, with some seen crying and comforting one another.
Authorities confirmed that at least nine people died and more than 300 were injured in the earthquake. Some victims were rushed to hospitals in Dhaka with serious injuries.
At least 14 buildings were damaged across different districts. Masonry from an eight-storey building in Dhaka collapsed onto a busy road, injuring several people who were standing nearby.
A fire also broke out at a power station following the quake, but emergency teams brought it under control.
Witnesses described scenes of chaos. One man said he saw rubble falling on people waiting to buy meat. Another witness said a young child suffered a fatal injury when debris fell from above.
Bangladesh’s interim leader, Muhammad Yunus, expressed sorrow over the deaths and injuries. He said that the government had ordered all departments to assess damage and provide support immediately.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department reported that the shaking lasted around 26 seconds, long enough for people to run outside and for buildings to sway.
Yunus, who became the country’s leader after last year’s mass uprising, assured that every necessary measure was being taken. National elections are planned for February 2026.
The earthquake was also felt in the Indian city of Kolkata, more than 325 km away from the epicentre. People there rushed out of homes and workplaces, though no major damage was reported in India.
The full extent of losses in Bangladesh is still being assessed, and emergency teams continue to monitor affected areas.
