7 Legends. Infinite Legacy. ICC Hall of Fame Welcomes New Class!

Post by : Anish

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has further enriched its illustrious Hall of Fame, inducting seven new cricketing titans in a glittering ceremony held at the iconic Abbey Road Studios in London. This fresh intake of five men and two women takes the total number of Hall of Famers to 122, a testament to the enduring legacy and global appeal of the sport. The announcement, made just ahead of the much-anticipated World Test Championship Final, has set the cricketing world abuzz, celebrating the careers of these remarkable individuals who have left an indelible mark on the game.

The Class of 2025 features a diverse group of players, each a legend in their own right, representing different eras and playing styles. The inductees were chosen through a rigorous process involving existing Hall of Famers, senior ICC executives, and a global panel of cricket media.

Leading the charge from India is none other than the "Captain Cool" himself, Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Revered for his astute leadership and ice-cool composure under pressure, Dhoni captained India to victory in the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2011 ODI World Cup, and the 2013 Champions Trophy, making him the only captain to win all three major ICC white-ball tournaments. His career statistics are equally impressive:

  • ODIs: 350 matches, 10,773 runs at an average of 50.57, with 10 centuries and 73 fifties. He also has 321 catches and 123 stumpings.
  • Tests: 90 matches, 4,876 runs at an average of 38.08, with 6 centuries, along with 256 catches and 38 stumpings.
  • T20Is: 98 matches, 1,617 runs at an average of 37.60, with 57 catches and 34 stumpings.

From South Africa, two stalwarts of their golden era have been inducted: Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla. Smith, a formidable opening batsman and one of Test cricket's most successful captains, led South Africa in a record 109 Tests, winning 53 of them.

  • Tests: 117 matches, 9,265 runs at an average of 48.25.
  • ODIs: 197 matches, 6,989 runs at an average of 37.98.

Hashim Amla, known for his elegant technique and incredible consistency, was a run-scoring machine across formats. He was the first South African to score a Test triple century.

  • Tests: 124 matches, 9,282 runs at an average of 46.64.
  • ODIs: 181 matches, 8,113 runs at an average of 49.46.
  • T20Is: 44 matches, 1,277 runs at an average of 33.60.

Australia's destructive opening batsman, Matthew Hayden, also found his rightful place in the Hall of Fame. A key figure in Australia's dominant teams of the early 2000s, Hayden was renowned for his powerful hitting and ability to dismantle bowling attacks.

  • Tests: 103 matches, 8,625 runs at an average of 50.73.
  • ODIs: 161 matches, 6,133 runs at an average of 43.80.

New Zealand's all-time great all-rounder, Daniel Vettori, was recognized for his immense contributions with both bat and ball. A wily left-arm spinner, he was also a highly capable lower-order batsman.

  • Tests: 113 matches, 4,531 runs and 362 wickets.
  • ODIs: 295 matches, 2,253 runs and 305 wickets.
  • T20Is: 34 matches, 205 runs and 38 wickets.

The women's game was equally represented with the induction of two exceptional players: Sana Mir of Pakistan and Sarah Taylor of England. Sana Mir, a pioneering figure in Pakistani women's cricket, was an influential captain and a world-class off-spinner.

  • ODIs: 120 matches, 151 wickets at an average of 24.27, and 1,630 runs.
  • T20Is: 89 matches, 89 wickets and 802 runs.

England's dynamic wicketkeeper-batter, Sarah Taylor, was celebrated for her innovative stroke play and exceptional glovework, which redefined women's wicketkeeping.

  • ODIs: 126 matches, 4,056 runs at an average of 38.26, with 87 catches and 51 stumpings.
  • T20Is: 90 matches, 2,177 runs at an average of 29.02, with 23 catches and 51 stumpings.
  • Tests: 10 matches, 300 runs, with 18 catches and 2 stumpings.

ICC Chairman Mr. Jay Shah extended his heartfelt congratulations to the inductees, stating, "Inducting legends into the ICC Hall of Fame is our way of honouring the game's most extraordinary contributors. This accolade is reserved exclusively for those whose achievements have left an indelible mark on the sport, and each selection is made purely on merit."

The event served as a poignant reminder of cricket's rich history and the incredible talent that has graced the game. These seven legends, through their skill, dedication, and inspiring performances, have not only achieved personal greatness but have also played a crucial role in shaping the sport and captivating millions of fans worldwide. Their induction into the ICC Hall of Fame ensures their legacies will continue to inspire generations to come.
