Rome: A 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck Italy's southern region of Calabria late Friday, but there were no immediate reports of damage. The earthquake was centered three kilometers west of Pietrapaola in the province of Cosenza on the Ionian Sea, as reported by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV).
Fire officials posted on X (formerly Twitter) that there had been no reports of damage or calls for help, though checks were ongoing. Pietrapaola Mayor Manuela Labonia told RaiNews 24 that "the situation is calm." She added that residents had felt "other tremors, less strong ones," after the initial quake, leading many to stay outdoors.

Carlo Doglioni, the head of INGV, also spoke to RaiNews 24, noting that there had been various tremors in the area in recent days and that the agency was closely monitoring the situation. "We don't know if this is the maximum (tremor) in the sequence," Doglioni said.
Reports on social media indicated that the earthquake was felt as far away as Bari, Puglia, approximately 250 kilometers (150 miles) to the north. The situation remains under observation as authorities continue to assess any potential impacts.
