1981 Indian Airlines Hijacker Gajinder Singh Khalsa Found Dead in Pakistan

NEW DELHI: Gajinder Singh, a notorious figure and fugitive involved in the 1981 hijacking of an Indian Airlines flight to Lahore, is reported to have died in Pakistan under unclear circumstances. Sources suggest that Singh, a key player in several anti-India activities, may have succumbed to a massive cardiac arrest.

Back in 1981, Singh was one of five individuals who hijacked an Indian Airlines plane. The aircraft, carrying 111 passengers along with six crew members, was en route on September 29 when it was forcibly diverted to Lahore. The hijackers' demands included the release of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, a prominent figure in the Khalistan movement, along with other extremists associated with the cause.

Singh's involvement in the hijacking marked a significant moment in his long history of opposition against the Indian state. In addition to his role in the hijacking, Singh was a co-founder of the Dal Khalsa, a group labeled as a terrorist organization by Indian authorities. This organization has been linked to numerous violent activities aimed at disrupting the region.

In 2002, Singh's notoriety was further cemented when he was placed on India's list of 20 most-wanted terrorists. Despite being a wanted man, he continued to engage in activities against India from his base in Pakistan up until his recent demise. His death closes a long-standing chapter of pursuit by Indian law enforcement, although many details about his final years and the exact nature of his death remain sparse.
