When the UAE’s summer temperatures go above 50°C, working outside can become very dangerous. To keep outdoor workers safe, the UAE government has made a special rule called the midday work ban. This rule is very important, especially for workers in construction, gardening, road work, and cleaning.
Let’s learn what this rule means and how it helps.
The midday work ban means no one can work outside under the sun from 12:30 PM to 3:00 PM, starting from June 15 to September 15 every year.
This rule is from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE). It helps protect workers from getting sick due to the heat.
Working in very hot weather can be bad for your health. It can cause:
Heatstroke
Dehydration (loss of body water)
Tiredness and confusion
Sunburn or fainting
In very bad cases, it can even be life-threatening. That’s why this break is needed to give workers time to rest and cool down during the hottest part of the day.
All private companies where people work outside must follow this rule. This includes:
Building and construction companies
Road and maintenance crews
Landscaping and gardening teams
Outdoor cleaning workers
Any job that happens under the hot sun
Supervisors must change the work times so that no one works outside between 12:30 PM and 3:00 PM.
Yes, but only a few. Some jobs cannot be stopped, like:
Emergency repair of water, electricity, or sewage
Traffic control or urgent services
Special technical jobs that must be done immediately
But even in these cases, the workers must be given:
Shade or covered resting places
Cold water to drink
Cooling fans or mist sprays
First-aid kits
If a company does not follow the midday work ban, they can get:
A fine of AED 5,000 per worker, up to AED 50,000 total
A stop on their work permits
Bad records with the MoHRE, which can harm their business
Workers can call 600590000 or use the MoHRE app to report if this rule is broken. Government officers also check sites during summer.
All outdoor workers have the right to:
A break between 12:30 PM and 3:00 PM
A cool, shaded place to rest
Enough drinking water and salts
First-aid support if needed
Employers must:
Make a smart work schedule for summer
Give training on how to avoid heat sickness
Provide cool uniforms or hats
Put up posters (in different languages) to inform workers
This helps everyone stay safe and feel cared for.
If you work outside, follow these simple health tips:
Drink water every 15-20 minutes
Wear light-colored and loose clothes
Take many breaks in the shade
Watch out for signs of heat stress like headaches, feeling dizzy, or cramps
Tell your supervisor right away if you feel sick
These steps can stop serious health problems before they happen.
The midday work ban is part of the UAE’s big plan to protect workers’ health. The government is also giving:
Free mobile health clinics
Training in many languages
Better housing and living conditions
Legal help and rights for all workers
This shows that the UAE cares about the people who work hard every day in the sun.
