The governor of Washington State, Bob Ferguson, has declared a state of emergency to ensure sufficient jet fuel reaches Seattle-Tacoma International Airport after a major fuel pipeline leak disrupted supplies. The emergency order temporarily suspends regulations that limit the driving hours for commercial vehicle operators transporting jet fuel. This step aims to maintain safe fuel delivery while addressing the shortage.
The emergency follows a leak in the Olympic Pipeline, reported on November 11, north of Seattle, between Everett and Snohomish. Pipeline operators notified state authorities and have been working with both state and federal agencies to contain, clean, and repair the leak. The pipeline, which is 400 miles (644 kilometers) long and operated by BP Pipelines North America, delivers gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and other petroleum products from refineries in northwest Washington to distribution terminals across Washington and Oregon.
Officials have not provided a specific timeline for when the pipeline will return to normal operations. Authorities warned that if fuel delivery does not resume by Saturday, airport operations at Seattle-Tacoma International could face significant disruptions. To manage the situation, airport officials have advised incoming flights to top up fuel tanks before landing to ensure continuous operations.
The emergency declaration allows increased flexibility for fuel transport, enabling trucks to deliver jet fuel without being restricted by normal state driving hour limits. State officials emphasized that safety measures remain in place despite the temporary rule changes. The declaration reflects the critical role of the Olympic Pipeline in supplying fuel to the Pacific Northwest and the potential impact of shortages on airport and regional operations.
The pipeline shutdown highlights vulnerabilities in fuel distribution and underscores the need for rapid government intervention to maintain essential services, especially for large transportation hubs like Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
