Fauja Singh, the world-famous marathon runner who became a symbol of strength, hope, and determination, passed away on Monday afternoon at the age of 114. He died after being hit by an unidentified vehicle while taking a walk near his home in the Bias village of Punjab’s Jalandhar district. The news of his sudden and tragic death has left the nation and the global running community in deep shock and sorrow.

Accident in Bias Village: What Happened
According to reports, the accident happened around 3:30 PM on Monday when Fauja Singh was out for a regular walk. He was crossing the road in his native village, Bias, when an unknown vehicle struck him. The vehicle did not stop, and the driver fled the scene immediately.
After the accident, Fauja Singh was rushed to a private hospital in Jalandhar. Sadly, despite all efforts, he could not survive the injuries and was declared dead.
Confirmation from His Biographer Khushwant Singh
Author Khushwant Singh, who wrote the biography of Fauja Singh titled "Turbaned Tornado," was among the first to confirm the heartbreaking news. He wrote a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), saying: “My Turbaned Tornado is no more. It is with great sadness that I share the passing of my most revered S. Fauja Singh. He was struck by an unidentified vehicle around 3:30 pm today in his village, Bias, while crossing the road. Rest in peace, my dear Fauja.”
Khushwant Singh was deeply close to Fauja Singh and had worked closely with him to share his inspiring life story with the world.
Police Begin Investigation
The local police, led by SHO Hardeep Singh of Adampur Police Station, have started their investigation into the case. Fauja Singh’s son immediately informed the police about the accident. The investigation team reached the accident site shortly after.
SHO Hardeep Singh shared details with the media. He said: “As of now, the car that hit Fauja Singh has not been traced. We are investigating the matter, and an FIR has been registered. He was walking on the main road at the time of the incident. We will trace the case soon and arrest the accused.”
The local community has also demanded strict action and speedy justice in the case.

Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria shared a heartfelt post on X. He wrote: “Deeply saddened by the passing of Sardar Fauja Singh Ji, the legendary marathon runner and symbol of resilience. At 114, he joined me in the ‘Nasha Mukt, Rangla Punjab’ march with unmatched spirit. His legacy will continue to inspire a drug-free Punjab. Om Shanti Om.”
He later added a longer tribute, remembering how even at 114, Fauja Singh had participated in a two-day march to raise awareness against drugs. He described Singh’s energy, spirit, and the powerful message he carried.

BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa also expressed his deep sorrow. He wrote: “Deeply saddened by the passing of Fauja Singh ji, a symbol of unbreakable spirit, resilience, and timeless inspiration. At 114, he proved that age is just a number and purpose knows no limits. A legend not just in running, but in life. Rest in power, Sir.”
