Ivan Gallegos, a 19-year-old University of Southern California (USC) student, has been arrested on suspicion of murder after fatally stabbing a homeless man during a vehicle break-in incident on USC's Greek Row.
The altercation occurred on Monday evening when Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon involving a knife in the 700 block of West 28th Street. According to LAPD statements, the victim, a homeless man, was allegedly breaking into vehicles when Gallegos confronted him and stabbed him.
Interim LAPD Chief Dominic Choi provided further details, stating that Gallegos encountered the homeless man breaking into his car in the rear parking lot of a fraternity house. During the confrontation, the homeless man reportedly claimed to have a gun, prompting Gallegos to stab him in what he claimed was self-defense.

The identity of the homeless man has not been disclosed, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ivan Gallegos, a resident of Los Angeles, remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. He was subsequently arrested and booked on suspicion of murder, with bail set at $2 million.
In a previous feature by USC's Annenberg Media, Gallegos was profiled as an up-and-coming musician and student at the Marshall School of Business. The profile highlighted his journey growing up in an environment marked by his parents' involvement in gang activities, leading to their periodic incarceration.
Despite these challenges, Gallegos focused on his passion for music, honing his skills as both an instrumentalist and vocalist. He is also reportedly affiliated with the Delta Tau Delta fraternity at USC, according to a fraternity manager who confirmed Gallegos' identity in connection with the incident.
The case has sparked attention and concern within the USC community, prompting ongoing investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fatal altercation on campus.
