The United Nations human rights chief has strongly criticized the recent US military strikes targeting alleged drug traffickers near the coast of South America, describing the actions as “unacceptable” and a violation of international law. The statement comes as global outrage grows over the deaths of more than 60 people in a series of US operations since September.
According to official briefings, the United States has carried out at least 13 strikes on vessels near Venezuela and in the eastern Pacific Ocean. Washington claims the boats were involved in drug trafficking operations, though it has not publicly provided evidence to substantiate these claims.
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has condemned the strikes, calling them illegal and an act of aggression against his country’s sovereignty. He accused US President Donald Trump of attempting to destabilize his government under the guise of anti-narcotics operations.
The situation has escalated since the US increased its military presence in the Caribbean in September, deploying a nuclear submarine, warships, and aircraft carriers to the region. Venezuela responded by reinforcing its coastal defenses and mobilizing tens of thousands of troops to safeguard national territory.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro confirmed that several of his citizens were among the victims, while families from Trinidad and Tobago and Ecuador have demanded proof that their relatives were involved in drug trafficking. Legal experts and human rights organizations have called for transparent investigations and independent oversight into the operations.
The US government has acknowledged a series of deadly operations beginning on September 2, when 11 people were killed in the first strike near Venezuela’s coast. Subsequent strikes on suspected drug boats between September and November have resulted in dozens more deaths, including Venezuelans, Colombians, and other Latin American nationals.
While US defense officials maintain the missions were part of an expanded campaign against drug smuggling, multiple South American governments have dismissed the justification as unverified. The UN and several human rights advocates have urged Washington to share evidence and halt further attacks until legality and accountability are established.
As the diplomatic fallout deepens, calls for an independent UN-led inquiry are growing louder, with many warning that continued strikes could destabilize the already volatile Caribbean region.
