In a heart-wrenching incident, an American man and his teenage son were killed after being stung more than 100 times by Asian giant hornets while vacationing in Laos. The victims, identified as 47-year-old Daniel Owen and his 15-year-old son, Cooper, were attacked during a zip-lining adventure near Luang Prabang on October 15, The Times reported.
Owen, originally from Idaho, was the headmaster of a private school in Vietnam, where he lived with his wife, Jessica, and their son. The family had been on a short holiday when the tragedy struck.
According to reports, the father and son were descending from a tree with a guide when they accidentally disturbed a nest of Asian giant hornets — the world’s largest hornet species, known for its venomous sting that can trigger intense pain, severe allergic reactions, and in rare cases, death.
Witnesses said the insects swarmed them instantly, stinging both victims repeatedly. “Their whole bodies were covered in red spots — more than 100 stings over the entire body,” said Dr. Phanomsay Phakan from the Phakan Arocavet Clinic, who treated the victims. “It was very, very painful and extremely dangerous. I had never seen such a severe case in my 20 years of practice.”
Initially, the pair were conscious and showed no immediate signs of anaphylactic shock when rushed to the hospital. However, their condition deteriorated rapidly, and despite medical efforts, both succumbed to the venom within hours.
The eco-adventure resort, Green Jungle Park, where the incident occurred, expressed deep condolences and described the tragedy as an “unforeseeable natural accident.”
“Following this unprecedented incident, we have reviewed all existing safety procedures. This was an extraordinary natural occurrence that has never happened before in our experience,” a spokesperson for the park said.
The shocking deaths have sparked renewed discussions about adventure tourism safety in Southeast Asia, where encounters with venomous insects and animals are not uncommon. Experts have urged zip-line operators and eco-parks to take additional precautions, especially in forested areas during hornet breeding seasons.
