India’s digital payment system, Unified Payments Interface (UPI), is growing bigger and better in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), which handles UPI’s global operations, announced that it is working hard to make UPI payments available across the UAE. This will make payments easier for millions of Indians who travel or live in the UAE.
What is UPI and Why is it Important?
UPI is a real-time payment system developed in India. It helps people send and receive money instantly from their bank accounts using mobile apps. You can pay for your shopping, school fees, bills, or anything else just by scanning a QR code or using a phone number linked to the bank account. Today, UPI handles more than 18 billion transactions every month in India, making it one of the world’s biggest and most trusted digital payment systems.

Why is UAE Important for UPI?
Many Indians visit or work in the UAE. In fact, the Ministry of Tourism says over seven million Indians visit UAE every year. Indians are the largest group of visitors to UAE. This makes it important for them to have an easy way to pay for things while staying there. Until now, Indian travelers had to depend on cash or local cards. With UPI, they can use the same mobile apps they use in India to pay at shops, malls, restaurants, and other places in UAE.
How is NPCI International Expanding UPI in UAE?
NPCI International has been working with many companies and banks in the UAE to make UPI payments possible. They have partnered with NeoPay from Mashreq Bank, Network International, and Magnati. These partnerships help merchants in the UAE accept UPI payments through QR codes. This means Indian travelers can simply scan the QR code and pay directly from their Indian bank account.
Where Can Indians Use UPI in UAE Right Now?
Some big stores in UAE have already started accepting UPI payments. For example:
Dubai Duty Free, where travelers shop at the airport before their flights.
Lulu Hypermarket, which is a popular supermarket for groceries, electronics, and clothes.
These stores now let Indian customers pay easily using their mobile apps without needing cash or international cards.
What Did Indian Officials Say About This Development?
Satish Kumar Sivan, who is India’s Consul General in Dubai, said this will transform the payment experience for Indians in UAE. He said that once UPI is fully integrated with UAE’s payment system, it will make life easier for both Indian travelers and the large Indian community living there. He praised NPCI International for working quickly with UAE banks, stores, and payment providers to bring this to reality.
Why is This Important for UAE?
The UAE government wants to make its economy cashless. They have set a goal that 90 percent of transactions in the country should be digital by the year 2026. This means most payments will be done using mobile phones or cards instead of cash. By accepting UPI, UAE merchants will have access to a large number of Indian customers who are already comfortable with digital payments.
What Did NPCI International CEO Say?
Ritesh Shukla, the Managing Director and CEO of NPCI International, said this is a big milestone. He explained that it will make payments very convenient for Indian travelers and residents in UAE. He also said it shows that other countries trust India’s digital payment technology, which is safe and very advanced.
How Will UPI Payments Work in UAE?
When an Indian traveler uses UPI in UAE, they will pay in Indian Rupees. The app will show the exchange rate clearly so the customer knows how much they are paying. The system will also follow all security rules such as:
Transaction limits set by the Reserve Bank of India.
Two-factor authentication to keep payments safe.
International usage controls to avoid misuse.
Which Sectors Will Get UPI First?
NPCI International is planning to bring UPI to many sectors in UAE, including:
Retail shops and supermarkets
Hotels and restaurants
Entertainment places like cinemas and parks
Transportation services such as taxis and buses
Essential services like pharmacies and clinics
This will help Indians pay easily everywhere they go in UAE.
What is the Bigger Goal Behind This Move?
This expansion is not just about helping travelers. It is also about building a strong financial connection between India and UAE. It will support trade, tourism, and business. It also shows how India’s payment technology can work smoothly with other countries’ systems while keeping high security standards.
What is NPCI International?
NPCI International is a special company created in April 2020. It is a part of NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) which handles all payment systems in India like UPI and RuPay. NPCI International works to take India’s payment technology to other countries. It helps them improve their payment systems with Indian technology, knowledge, and ideas.
How Will This Help the Future of Digital Payments Globally?
By expanding UPI to UAE and other countries, India is proving that its payment systems can work globally. This will:
Make payments easier for Indians abroad.
Help other countries learn from India’s digital success.
Build strong economic relationships between India and its partner countries.
The expansion of UPI in UAE is a major step towards making payments easier, faster, and safer for Indians when they travel or live abroad. It also supports UAE’s dream of becoming a cashless economy. Thanks to NPCI International and its partners, Indians can soon shop, eat, travel, and enjoy their time in UAE without worrying about carrying cash or cards, as their mobile phone will handle everything safely and instantly.
