The Canadian government has committed an additional $120 million in humanitarian and developmental assistance for Sudan as the civil war now marks its fourth year, exacerbating what international organizations label as a critical humanitarian emergency.

Anita Anand announced the funding, emphasizing that Sudan has become a primary focus for Canada due to the deteriorating conditions characterized by widespread hunger, displacement, and persistent violence against civilian populations.

According to UN estimates, nearly 34 million individuals in Sudan — approximately two-thirds of the population — urgently need humanitarian aid. Since the onset of the conflict, over 13 million people have been displaced, and tens of thousands have lost their lives.

The conflict erupted from a power struggle between military and paramilitary groups but has evolved into a larger, violent confrontation, particularly in areas like Darfur. The nation remains fragmented, complicating relief efforts and political stability.

Canadian officials indicated that the new funding will furnish emergency food assistance, healthcare, nutrition programs, and protection for at-risk groups. Some funds will also support development initiatives, including educational and psychological support, through organizations like Save the Children Canada and UN entities.

Anand noted that there is credible evidence of starvation being weaponized in the ongoing conflict, exacerbated by systematic attacks on healthcare facilities and civilian infrastructures. Reports of widespread sexual violence against women and girls continue to emerge.

The funding announcement coincided with a global conference in Berlin, where various nations pledged billions for humanitarian support, addressing the funding shortfalls in international aid initiatives.

However, the Sudanese administration has condemned the international conference as meddling in its internal matters. Aid organizations are increasingly warning that the situation is deteriorating rapidly and requires urgent attention from the global community.

Canada's new commitment builds on over $220 million already allocated to assist affected populations, both in Sudan and neighboring states. The government asserts that this aid reflects its dedication to tackling global crises and protecting civilians amid conflict.

In summary, the situation in Sudan is dire, with millions facing critical food shortages, insufficient healthcare, and ongoing violence. International aid, including Canada’s latest contributions, is deemed vital to avert further humanitarian catastrophe.
