It generates thyroid hormones, mostly T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine), which regulate the rate of metabolism, or how rapidly your body burns calories. These hormones affect practically every cell in your body, from the heart to the skin, as well as your energy, temperature, and mood.

When your thyroid produces too many or too few of these hormones, it can cause dramatic weight changes. This is where the connection between thyroid function and weight management becomes clear.

Hypothyroidism and Weight Gain

Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid is underactive and doesn't produce enough thyroid hormones. This can lead to a slower metabolism, causing the body to burn fewer calories. As a result, many people with hypothyroidism experience weight gain.

It may not be an large amount of weight, but even small changes can feel significant. Common symptoms of hypothyroidism include fatigue, cold sensitivity, constipation, dry skin, and, of course, unexplained weight gain.

Furthermore, persons with hypothyroidism may find it difficult to exercise due to fatigue or joint pain, which contributes to weight gain.

When your metabolism slows down because of low thyroid hormone levels, your body retains more fat. This doesn’t necessarily indicate you are overeating, but rather that your body is unable to utilize calories properly. On the opposite end of the spectrum is hyperthyroidism, where the thyroid becomes overactive and generates an excess of thyroid hormone. This boosts the metabolism and can result in weight reduction, even if you eat more than normal.

Common hyperthyroidism symptoms include a rapid heart rate, anxiety, irritability, sweating too much, and accidental weight loss. You may be hungry all the time, yet even with increased food intake, your body burns calories quickly, making it difficult to maintain a healthy weight.

With an overactive thyroid, your body burns more calories than it needs, which leads to weight loss. Eat a Balanced Diet

No matter what thyroid condition you have, a balanced diet is essential for weight management. For hypothyroidism, focusing on foods that support thyroid function—such as iodine-rich foods like fish, dairy, and seaweed—can help. Avoid overly processed foods and focus on whole grains, lean proteins, and plenty of fruits and vegetables.

For hyperthyroidism, eating a balanced diet is equally important to prevent excessive weight loss. You may need to eat higher-calorie foods to ensure that your body is getting enough energy.

Exercise Regularly

Exercise is essential for everyone, but especially for those with thyroid disorders. Exercise can assist people with hypothyroidism enhance their metabolism and prevent weight gain. Strength training combined with cardiovascular activity can help increase energy and muscle mass. Resistance training is ideal for persons with hyperthyroidism since it helps to preserve muscle mass and bone density.

Monitor and Adjust Your Treatment

As you work to manage your weight, it's important to work closely with your healthcare provider. They can modify your thyroid medication as needed to help you achieve better hormone balance, which will lead to improved weight management.
