In a significant diplomatic development, the United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 2799 on Thursday, officially lifting sanctions on Syria’s President Ahmed al-Sharaa and Interior Minister Anas Khattab. The resolution marks a pivotal shift in international engagement with Syria, signaling renewed dialogue and easing of restrictions on the country’s leadership.

The resolution, drafted by the United States, was passed with 14 votes in favor, while China abstained from voting. This outcome reflects broad international support for advancing peace and stability in Syria, despite some continued reservations among global powers.

Resolution 2799 removes both al-Sharaa and Khattab from the list of individuals sanctioned for alleged associations with groups linked to “Daesh” and “Al-Qaida.” The decision comes as part of broader efforts to reassess the implementation of targeted sanctions and encourage positive political and humanitarian developments within the country.

The Security Council reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to Syria’s sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and national unity. The resolution also emphasized the Council’s continued support for the Syrian people, particularly in light of the country’s ongoing economic challenges and humanitarian crisis.

The resolution welcomed Syria’s recent commitments to facilitate unhindered humanitarian access across its territories, intensify its efforts to combat terrorism, and strengthen the protection of human rights. These pledges were seen as constructive steps toward stabilizing the nation and rebuilding trust with the international community.

Diplomatic observers have noted that Resolution 2799 could pave the way for improved relations between Syria and several Western nations, potentially influencing future negotiations on reconstruction aid and regional security. The decision is also viewed as part of a larger geopolitical realignment in the Middle East, as global powers reconsider their approach toward post-conflict Syria.

While many have hailed the UN Security Council’s move as a step toward reconciliation and renewed diplomacy, others caution that it must be matched by concrete progress on human rights, political reforms, and accountability measures within Syria.

With Resolution 2799 now in effect, the coming months will reveal how Syria’s government acts on its promises of humanitarian cooperation and peacebuilding. The international community will be watching closely to ensure that the spirit of the resolution translates into tangible benefits for the Syrian people.
