A UAE-based aquaculture company connected to Dubai’s ruling Al-Maktoum family has signed an agreement to build a fish farm and research center in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, India. The project will cost an initial $461 million.
Aqua Bridge Group, led by Sheikh Ahmed bin Mana bin Khalifa Al-Maktoum, will also set up a plant capable of producing 1 million tonnes of aquafeed. This feed is meant to support India’s growing fish farming industry. In addition, Aqua Bridge plans to work on a hatchery that will raise 300 million fish fry. The project is a joint effort with the Uttar Pradesh government and the World Bank UP-Agrees programme, which is a $325 million initiative aimed at boosting farmers’ incomes by improving crop productivity, promoting modern farming methods, and helping farmers get better access to markets. The project will also include training for 100,000 farmers.
According to Aqua Bridge’s founder and CEO, Mohammad Tabish, this new development is expected to change the way sustainable fisheries work in India and improve food security. The research center will focus on better fish genetics, controlling diseases, and improving farming techniques.
