In the wake of the devastating Air India Flight AI 171 crash near Ahmedabad on June 12, places of worship across the UAE—including mosques, temples, and churches—came together to express solidarity, offer prayers for the victims and their families, and support the lone survivor.
At the Indian Consulate in Dubai, a solemn minute of silence was observed during an event marking the International Day of Yoga, with community leaders, diplomatic officials, and attendees standing in respectful tribute led by Consul General Satish Kumar Sivan. Emirati and Indian flags flew side by side, symbolising unity in grief for this human tragedy.
In Abu Dhabi, at the recently inaugurated BAPS Hindu Mandir, spiritual leaders conducted prayers for peace and healing. The temple's serene prayer hall hosted chants and blessings for the victims, with organizers expressing hope that the survivors would receive swift medical care and emotional support .
Muslim community centres across the UAE also joined the collective mourning. At large mosques in Sharjah and Ajman, imams led prayers for the departed souls and invoked prayers for the bereaved families in Ahmedabad. In Sharjah, an event aligned with the Yoga Day hoped to “bring peace and collective compassion”, sharing heartfelt messages via loudspeakers .
Similarly, Christian congregations including the Holy Trinity Church in Dubai and community groups in Abu Dhabi offered special condolence services, lighting candles and offering prayers. Church officials reaffirmed their support, promising aid and spiritual guidance to any expat affected by the tragedy .
Numerous Indian expatriate associations, including the Indian Association Sharjah, publicly expressed sorrow and extended prayers and moral support. A spokesperson highlighted that these vigils “symbolise our bond with those back home” and reaffirm commitment to support affected families, whether financially or emotionally.

The UAE government also expressed solidarity. Senior officials praised the expatriate-led briefings and confirmed coordination with Indian authorities to facilitate consular aid and medical evac efforts for injured survivors. Flights from Ahmedabad were expedited to bring family members to Dubai and Abu Dhabi .
These multi-faith tributes highlight the diversity and empathy of the region. They demonstrate how mosques, temples, churches, and community centres in the UAE united in compassion, mirroring global solidarity as diplomatic missions and ordinary citizens support what has become one of India’s worst aviation disasters.
As the investigation continues, with India’s probe teams and international expert agencies combing through black-box flight data, the emotional aftermath continues to ripple far beyond borders. Places of worship—through prayers, vigils, and compassionate gatherings—have offered tangible comfort and connection amid grief.
