Sheikh Mohammed Marks UN’s 80th Anniversary with Message

Dubai’s visionary leader, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, delivered a heartfelt recorded message on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, reflecting on its historic journey and timeless values.

In his address, His Highness described the moment as one of deep significance, stating:
“We stand today at a historic moment as we commemorate eighty years since the founding of the United Nations. Yet, the world faces complex global challenges, reaffirming the urgent need, now more than ever, to revive the principles and values enshrined in the UN Charter to ensure the continuity of its essential role in upholding peace and security.”

Sheikh Mohammed underscored the UAE’s long-standing commitment to peace, dialogue, and cooperation since joining the United Nations in 1971, shortly after the nation’s formation. He highlighted how the UAE’s foreign policy has consistently been rooted in the values of tolerance, peaceful coexistence, and sustainable development, guiding its international engagements for over five decades.

Expanding on the UAE’s humanitarian and diplomatic role, His Highness noted:
“The UAE continues to play an active role in delivering humanitarian assistance, combating terrorism, and countering hate speech and extremism. The United Nations was founded eight decades ago as a global umbrella safeguarding humanity’s right to peace, justice, and dignity. Today, it carries the responsibility to renew its pledge to humanity, as its continued vitality and effectiveness remain the hope of mankind for the next eighty years.”

The UAE’s active participation in the international arena has been reflected through its membership in the UN Security Council—first during 1986-1987, and most recently in the 2022-2023 term, following its election in June 2021.

Founded in 1945 in the aftermath of World War II, the United Nations was created to prevent conflict, maintain peace and security, promote sustainable development, uphold human rights, and deliver humanitarian aid. Today, with 193 Member States, its Charter continues to embody the universal principles of cooperation, justice, and dignity.

Through Sheikh Mohammed’s message, the UAE reaffirmed its unwavering support for the UN’s mission, while calling for a renewed global commitment to the values that have kept the institution relevant for the past eighty years. His Highness’ words echoed not just as a tribute to the UN’s legacy, but as a call to action for the future of humanity.
