The tragic crash of Air India Flight AI171 on June 12 confirmed that two of its cabin crew were from Manipur. Nganthoi Sharma Kongbrailatpam, aged 22 from Thoubal district, and Lamnunthem Singson, from the Kuki‑Zo community, both lost their lives in the accident.
Their home state, still recovering from ethnic tensions, has united in grief and prayer. Chief Minister N. Biren Singh described the loss as heartbreaking, saying both women served “with dedication and pride” and were well-known in their communities .
Flight AI171, a Boeing 787‑8 Dreamliner en route from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick with 242 people aboard, crashed just minutes after takeoff. All 12 crew members died, along with 230 passengers and many people on the ground in the Meghani Nagar area near the airport.
Rescue teams discovered the names of the cabin crew from their IDs and contacted their families in Manipur. Footage showed relatives in Imphal breaking down as they received the tragic news.

State authorities in Manipur have declared a day of mourning. Public buildings will fly flags at half-mast, and local leaders have called for unity during this difficult time .
The crash also involved devastating loss of ground life. The aircraft struck a hostel at B.J. Medical College, killing medical students and a doctor’s family members. Investigators are analyzing black box data to determine the cause of the accident.
While the investigation continues, the people of Manipur mourn two brave young women who followed their passion and cared for travelers thousands of miles away from home.
