On Tuesday, baseball superstar Mike Trout took the stand in the wrongful death trial concerning his late teammate Tyler Skaggs. This lawsuit, initiated by Skaggs’ family, targets the Los Angeles Angels for a staggering $118 million. The pitcher, who passed away during a team trip in Texas in 2019 due to an overdose, left a profound impact on the baseball community, and now the trial seeks to determine if the team neglected its duty to protect him.
During his emotional testimony, Trout reminisced about his close friendship with Skaggs, which began in 2010 when they both played for the Angels’ minor league team in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. “Skaggs was always the life of the party,” Trout recalled, sharing their experiences dining out, watching football, and engaging in pickup basketball. Upon hearing the news of Skaggs' passing, Trout expressed that he cried and described it as one of the hardest moments he has lived through.
The Skaggs family alleges that the Angels failed to act against Eric Kay, a team employee known for his drug problems. Kay, who served as the team’s communications director, was later sentenced to 22 years in prison for providing Skaggs with counterfeit oxycodone laced with fentanyl. The family contends that the organization should have been aware of Kay's troubling behavior and taken precautions to ensure player safety.
Central to this investigation is Eric Kay’s role in the events leading to Skaggs’ death. Prosecutors assert he distributed opioids to Skaggs and other players. During the proceedings, Trout admitted he noticed signs of Kay’s substance issues long before the tragedy occurred.
Trout recounted first hearing about Kay’s troubling conduct from a clubhouse attendant, who warned players to refrain from giving Kay money for “stunts” like eyebrow shaving or getting hit with a baseball. “Drug concerns crossed my mind immediately,” Trout stated. “I wasn’t sure what kind, but that was my thought.”
He also noted that Kay often appeared “off,” displaying signs of sweating and hyperactivity that led him to suspect drug use, although he hadn’t pinpointed what exactly was happening. Trout even offered support to Kay, saying, “If you need anything, let me know,” though he couldn't recall if he specifically mentioned helping with rehab.
Following his realization about Kay’s possible drug complications, Trout became wary of endorsing memorabilia for him, concerned that signed items might be sold to fund drug use. This caution illustrated Trout’s increasing worry over the scenario and his aim to avert further distress.
The Angels have denied any wrongdoing, asserting they were unaware of Skaggs' drug use or Kay's distribution of drugs within the team. Nevertheless, the plaintiff's legal team argues that officials ignored significant warning signs and failed to uphold their own protocols.
According to the coroner’s report, Skaggs died from choking on his vomit after ingesting a lethal mix of alcohol, fentanyl, and oxycodone. Opioids from counterfeit pills provided by Kay were found in his system. He was discovered dead in his hotel room on July 1, 2019.
Before Trout took the stand, other crucial witnesses, including Angels executives Tim Mead and Tom Taylor, were interrogated regarding the team's knowledge of Kay's drug activity and any steps that were taken. The heartfelt testimonies play a vital role in ascertaining the team's legal accountability concerning the player's death.
The case of Tyler Skaggs resonates deeply within Major League Baseball, sparking conversations about drug awareness, organizational responsibility, and player safety. For Trout, the ordeal remains intensely personal; his courtroom statements encapsulated not just grief for a dear friend, but also ire over circumstances that perhaps could have been avoided.
As the trial unfolds in Orange County Superior Court, the Skaggs family seeks justice and accountability, aiming to underscore the essential need for teams to safeguard athletes from drug-related dangers. Trout's poignant testimony has become a pivotal element of the proceedings, providing a glimpse into the emotional impact this tragedy has wrought on those closest to Tyler Skaggs.
