Tiger Woods has not set a date for his return to competitive golf, and it remains uncertain if or when he will play again. However, one of his close PGA Tour friends hopes to see the 15-time major champion back on the course soon, possibly on the Champions Tour in 2026.
Woods underwent back surgery on October 10, which will prevent him from participating in the Hero World Challenge from December 4–7, a tournament he hosts. He is also not listed for the PNC Championship on December 20–21, where he has played alongside his son Charlie five times. Following these events, Woods will turn 50 on December 30, making him eligible for the Champions Tour, which begins with a season-opening event in Hawaii from January 22–24.
Speaking ahead of the RSM Classic, Woods’ friend expressed hope that the golf legend would return. “Tiger could play major championships and probably be competitive if he could get healthy. I’m hoping he’ll play and I hope I see him in Hawaii in January. That would be a nice start of the year,” he said.
Woods has not competed since the Open Championship in July 2024. He also had Achilles tendon surgery in March 2024 and has undergone a total of seven back surgeries during his career. Despite these challenges, he has committed to attending all matches with his indoor TGL team, showing his ongoing dedication to the sport.
His friend is also advocating for a mandatory cart rule on the Champions Tour to help players like Woods manage the physical demands of walking 18 holes. “I feel bad when I ride. I walked 18 holes yesterday. I could have ridden half of this round on the Champions Tour,” he said, emphasizing the importance of comfort for older players.
Woods is not the only notable player turning 50 soon. Former Ryder Cup captain Zach Johnson will also become eligible for the Champions Tour in February 2026. There is hope that both stars will join the circuit, adding excitement and prestige.
Another close friend of Woods, Notah Begay III, highlighted Woods’ drive to surpass Sam Snead’s record of 82 PGA Tour wins. “I think in his heart of hearts, 83 is a big number. It’s an important number,” Begay said. He also noted that Woods’ main challenge currently is walking, not his skill or strength. Woods continues to hit the ball with fast speeds, around 175–180 mph, which remains competitive for professional tournaments.
Woods’ health and rehabilitation will determine when he returns to competitive golf. Fans and fellow players are hopeful that with proper recovery, he will soon join the Champions Tour and continue his legendary career. His potential comeback is highly anticipated, not only for his skill but also for the inspiration he brings to the golfing world.
